That's an excellent piece.

It looks like quite a lot of work to carve it, was the piece difficult to hold? It looks like it would be quite tricky to make the hollows as even as you have got them, did you do a lot of marking out before hand or just go by eye?

I think that a bit of carving can really improve some pieces of turning, but the few goes I've had have been a great deal more time consuming than the turning.

Thanks for sharing :D

thanks for your kind comments

it took me about 6 hours to carve, it took about an hour to turn. it was suprisingly o.k to hold with one hand whilist i carved with the other.
it is tricky to get the hollows even, the only marking out i did was some vertical pencil lines to divide the piece up into 8.

Did a couple of fluted columns and used a router fixed on a frame on the lathe bed to space and cut the flutes.

Looking at your pot, using a router with a indexing head, and a depth spacer on the cutter it could give you all the dimensions you need without measuring. Then all you need do is link/blend together the lows and highs. With the right shaped cutter it could do almost all the wood removal for you, and in a matching cut.

Just a thought! :-k

Hi Cornucopia
I really like what you've done. I'm now inspired to have a go myself. All I need is someone to extend the hours available for the shed.
I also have a look at the DVD you mention.
Cheers Dave

thanks dave

just to clarify any confusion i may of accidntally caused- john jordan's dvd i mention on page 1 of this thread does not show you how to do this carving- what it does do is talk about how to manipulate wood/logs to get the best vase etc and how to dry wet wood, and allot more besides.

sorry if i have mislead anyone- but it is a good dvd anyway.

Hi Cornucopia

Just had a look at DVD and bought it - looks great value and very interesting - also had a look at the website - wow!

So much wood - so little time!
Cheers Dave
