Liked F1 in the 70's & 80's. Proper racing, proper characters. Haven't bothered with F1 or football for years now. Both are way too expensive and there's no way I'm prepared to fund it. Rather buy some decent tools. :)

Hi

No coincidence that Red Bull's fuel flowmeter failed again, (in the light of their upcoming hearing), F1 'engineering' at it's best

As a bike fan, the F1 has always been pedestrian for me. Hardly any overtaking, races too long, ship to shore radios enabling races to be won on strategy rather than being the fastest. Now they are on the way to becoming electric cars it is heading towards a farce.

The MotoGP is much better, with front straight speeds of 215mph the first race of the season was the best I've seen for a while. Marc Marquez is a phenomenon, at 21 he has broken lots of the 'youngest ever' records including youngest title winner last year and youngest rookie winner.
At Silverstone last year he dislocated a shoulder in the morning warm up before the race, had it put back and came second in the race in the afternoon. In the first race this year he was recovering from a broken leg from a winter practice crash and had only been putting weight on it for 7 days prior to the race.....he won. Last year he walked away from a 200mph crash.
There have been changes in the spec too, this is to allow the 'poorer' teams to compete and it's worked well levelling the playing field.

As well as the MGP there are 2 support/feeder classes (Moto2 & Moto3) in which there are several UK prospects. As well as MotoGP (the F1 of motorcycling) we are spoiled with World Superbikes (touring car class) and British Superbikes (same as worlds). There is seldom a weekend through the season when there isn't a race to watch.

Especially when Christian Horner said pre - race that he hoped it would happen again today. Trouble is, they'll get away with it. Though of course red bull don't have the resources of skills to "cheat" the system

I'm still a fan and don't like the new quiet cars or the fuel regulations or team orders come to that but at least it isn't so far a red bull one horse race.

I enjoyed the first race. The sound is certainly different but I am watching to see how long it will take for the monied teams to pull away again.

Graham, I think you are quite right with what you say.

What a lot of people don't take into account is that the 2013 race season was a culmination of 4 years R&D work with hardly and changes to the F1 rules.

The rule changes for 2014 season are massive and the cars will see massive developments over the coming months.

It's nice not to see a parade of Red Bull cars leading the pack race after race, but at the moment it looks like Mercedes are doing the same.

The cars are definitely slower some 3 to 5 seconds a lap on average at the moment, but I bet by mid season they will be as quick if not quicker.

With regard to the noise yes they don't sound as good but you must admit the sound of the turbos kicking in and out is impressive and it's nice to hear clearly the conversations between the drivers and the teams (except when Fernando speaks up).

I also think that the overtaking particularly with the lesser teams have made it a better viewing sport.

Looking forwards to the rest of the season

Vic

I have always enjoyed the stirring of the pot that new regulations generates and do not think F1 needs to necessarily stick with old stuff even if it was nice. I have been a fan since 1980 or so and enjoyed turbos the first time round.

I think the sounds are wonderful, they sound technical and complicated with whirrs and whistles as well as the mechanical noises from the engine. Not fussed about the volume, F1 for me was about the pinnacle of motor sport, not a loud noise, we have top fuel dragsters and tractor pulling for that and frankly they knock even a V10 at 20K rpm into a cocked hat.

The biggest bonus for me is the cars sliding a lot more as the torque is massive compared with the old engines, you can really see the drivers skill level much better now and a racing car for me should always be more power than grip.

Comparing to MotoGP does not make sense, different sports and guess what I like both, I also like club motorsport and BTCC for different reasons as well. F1 is about the top car racing in the world and it still is that, nothing comes close to the single minded purposefulness of an F1 car and that includes 2014 cars complete with whistles, screeches and farts.

Oh by the way F2 finished in 1984, It was re branded "Formula Two" for a couple of years more recently but has died again. :D Ultimate race laptimes are hard to compare due to fuel loads and how much power is being allowed to the engine but Kimi's average Melbourne laptime in 2013 was 1:32.3 with Nico's being 1:34.1 this year so slower yes but the 2013 cars were fully developed machines and 2014 in their first race of the new regs. Top speeds in 2014 are higher with 317kph vs 310kph in 2013. I think we will see laptimes get very close during 2014 to 2013 and earlier.

+ 1 for that, well put =D>

I defy anyone to watch this, then tell me F1 is exciting. Open road racing in Ireland...like the TT but with mass starts and on shorter circuits. 200mph In the wet!

Like I said, its a different sport. A bit like saying, why do you watch snooker when golf is much more exciting.

I love bike racing, even did a bit back in the 80's. It does not mean I cannot enjoy F1 for what it is. Its not a competition between sports.

I didn't say it was. I'm entitled to think that motorcycle sport is far more exciting than F1, and I'm entitled to say so.

Well after watching the last race, I have cancelled my sky hd subscription. I'm not watching junk like that again. From around lap 15 they were all saving fuel, that's not racing it's a high speed traffic jam.

There is a good article in 15 March New Scientist about F1 engine technology
