So I finally got around to attaching the swing away hinge and bed extension, I love it, now unless I'm turning something huge I don't have to turn the headstock away (as it always needs realignment) also it adds ballast to my cart on wheels, lots of swearing involved in attaching it but well worth it 😁

Nice set up Adam, I’ve got just the bed extension but it’s so useful being able to get the tailstock out of the reach of my elbow when doing faceplate/chucked work

I'm just happy i didn't end up selling it, maybe i'll have a go at making a baseball bat too :)

I think that this is why I value my extension the most. Yeah, sometimes i need to turn long items but generally it is getting the tailstock out if the way.

The bed extension is a great addition to the lathe but it was never designed to cantilever / overhang like that. If mine and I wish it were I would add to the bench or make it longer to support the bed. At least make a leg to support it when not being moved.

I thought that too but the instructions (swing away hinge instructions)say nothing should be under it, the bolts are high tensile and the hinge is super chunky and strong, in my case it's purpose is to keep the tailstock at a distance... Most of the time it's folded away though as my workshop space is limited.

I've got the older version of the lathe, but the clown I bought the extension from told me, (incorrectly), that his extension was compatible. The actual bed ways are the same, just bolt holes different. Do you guys reckon if I clamp it in place with the tailstock across the join to mark it, an HSS bit will get through the bed so I can bolt it together? (I can leave it in place, not need swing away)
Thanks in advance
Greg

@gregmcateer ive not long done the same thing, my DVR is 15 years old & I bought a new section which is now black, the holes didn’t quite line up so I drilled them slightly larger which did the trick.
I drilled them at the pillar drill with a HSS bit.

I’ve not bothered with a support, it seems to be holding up fine as the 4 bolts give a very positive fixing.

Doug, that's brilliant, thanks.
I don't have a tall pillar drill, so was thinking I'll have to go by eye, ( maybe slightly larger holes than needed, in case of wander), or, after marking, set the ext bed on a cradle on the lathe and advance it slowly onto drill held in headstock.
