EDIT: Don't bother reading on, I got it wrong.

I have just bid on an item, the amount I'm happy to pay expecting that amount to be exceeded but hoping to get lucky. As I was placing the bid a box popped up inviting me to place my highest bid so that Ebay could bid on my behalf. I thought they had just changed the format a little and that I needn't bother with it......I should have. I expected the 'current bid' box to increase by a small increment stating that I was now the new high bidder. Instead it leapt to the full bid amount that I had entered 4 times the amount that the initial high bid was!

It seems that unless you fill in the interim box Ebay will now post your high bid as the current bid and not hold back on your behalf.

get yourself a sniping service! I use Goofbid.com but there are doubtless countless others out there.

Are you sure that's what's happened ? It sounds like the last person put in a high maximum but it showed just enough for him to be the highest, then your bid was just above his maximum so you outbid his highest. In numbers: suppose start price is £1. I bid £10 it'll show as (for example) £1 since it was the start price and I matched it. You bid £11, you outbid my maximum so it'll show your £11.

I think that is exactly what happened.

Nothing has changed.

Yes certain. I didn't recognise the interim box and didn't take enough notice of it.

I already use Goofbid but thought I'd just bid on this one

What info do you get if you click on 'bids' (for bidding history) on that particular item?

Aha! Mystery solved. It seems someone had put on an auto bid that reached it's limit just beneath mine so my maximum automatically went on as the current bid DUH!

Even so a box popped up that I didn't recognise. You can tell I never read small print can't you?

As was said above :)

Glad I don’t know how to use Ebay, I think in this instance, ignorance really is bliss. :D :D

Take care.
