Anyone know what's up with them? Are they snowbound? Tried several times to speak to them today but all I got was a BT announcement saying that their message box was full.

I hope they're not the lastest victim of the credit crunch.

I find PM through this forum the only reliable way of contacting Ian.

Cheers, Ed

I'd be surprised if this isn't weather-related - it's been chaotic in and around Bristol this week, and I know that both the Severn Bridges were closed today due to falling lumps of ice!

Ian's work e-mail address is:

ian.john @ dragonsaws.co.uk

I'll PM you his home e-mail address as well (I'm sure he won't mind). :)

It's unlikely they've been hit that badly buy the credit crunch. While they generate a lot of work and income from woodworking, Ian once told me that a vast majority of their trade goes towards metalworkers.

Try Hamilton Edge, good quality blades & very good price & service

I had a new blade from Dragon delivered earlier this week I think it was monday seems normal business to me

I had the same contact problems last month but he responded by email early the next morning. My guess is they are busy to busy to answer the phone so let BT do it he then gets in early each morning and sorts out the enquiries etc.

I believe they've just had one of the guys leave, so they are trying to juggle the work between the remaining staff at the moment. Apparently you can't just phone the job centre and ask them to send a qualified saw doctor round!

We have been sending them loads of bandsaw orders placed through our website and I've spoken with them on the phone earlier this week, I find the best time to catch them is in the morning.

I think all of us at UKW completley agree that dragon saw are just simply the best.

> My company uses a birmingham based blades/ shaprning firm simply for ease. Otherwise we'd use dragon also!

Hi All

Sorry to hear that people have had problems contacting us - it is purely down to the weather though and we haven't been able to get in to work since wednesday afternoon. Since my laptop died then I have no way have checking work emails from the house anymore - which the missus is over the moon about as I don't spend most of the evening on the computer now!

As long as we don't have anymore snow, then hopefully everything will be back to normal tomorrow and I will be sorting all the emails out first thing in the morning.

I've taken all the messages off the phone so phone messages can be left again but generally a PM through the forum will get the fastest reply as I can check these from the house.

Fingers crossed that we don't have anymore snow and we can get back to normal from Monday :D

Not all of us think so  Sorry if this offends but if you think so fair enough, but your wrong to assume everyone on here thinks the same as you.

There are other saw companies out there that give good service, are price competative, and sell good products.

Can someone please tell me what is so different about the blades that Dragon supply?

I've never used them so can't comment either way, but I do find it odd that everyone seems to say that their products are superior.

Presumably they simply buy in rolls of blade stock from the manufacturers and then weld up individual blades to order. Well, dozens if not hundreds of saw doctors all over the country do exactly the same thing.

I can't imagine that Dragon (or anyone else) has a monopoly on the supply of a peculiarly superior brand of blade stock.

So what is so different about the blades that Dragon supply?

Cheers
Dan

Hi Dan

I suppose that I would be the best person to answer this :D

Yes, we buy the material in from the manufacturers and weld the blades to length and lots of other saw doctors also do this.
The important factor is where the material is sourced from.
The majority of other saw doctors/blade suppliers buy the cheapest material that they can so that their profits are higher, but we decided to buy the best material that we could find and even though there's a low profit margin we are hoping that the repeat business and volume of sales will not make this such an issue.

Some of the material that we buy (not all) is almost exclusive to us as we have an agreement with one manufacturer. We are only one of two suppliers in the UK that can stock this material - and no I'm not going to tell you who the other supplier is but they are more expensive than us :D

The rest of the material that we use can be bought by most other saw doctors/suppliers but they tend not to because of the prices. We try to be as competitive as possible with the prices and we might not be the cheapest but we are nowhere near the most expensive either.

It's taken us a long time and we've tested most blades by most of the manufacturers to find the range that we now have. We use a few different manufacturers as we've found that some are better at producing a certain type of blade.
Where most other suppliers will only stock blades by one manufacturer, we will stock what we consider to be the best of a certain type of blade rather than who manufactured it.
For example there’s one manufacturer who makes a brilliant 3/8” x 3tpi blade but the rest of their range is average so we only buy that particular blade from them and nothing else.

Some blades are better suited for certain types of cutting and we have got some really good specialist blades that most other suppliers either don’t know about or won’t stock due to the prices.

Not everyone is going to agree that the blades that we supply are the best and there’s always someone that will prefer a different type or will favour a certain manufacturer and that’s fine – we are confident in the products that we sell and we don’t expect to please everyone.

I also like to think that it’s not just the blades but the service as well which makes us a bit different – if a blade breaks, then we will re-weld it free of charge. If it can’t be re-welded and there’s no obvious reason for the blade breaking then we will replace the blade.
Whenever there’s a problem, then I always do my best to sort it out – we make mistakes and we have the occasional glitch but I always try to make sure that it’s sorted as soon as possible.

Ian

Just to add that, following recommendations from here and as a bandsaw newbie, Ian has been very helpful (and tolerant) as I've started out. I've ended up with an excellent product that has helped me move forward with the saw, and I will happily go back when I need to take the next step.

Ian

I have not tried any other make of blade having only just bought a band saw, but Ian's service is outstanding - a good example, I had two blades break on me recently - both my fault  . Ian had them repaired FOC even though I was willing to pay for the repair!

I am happy to support any business who provide this level of service!
