If your waste is to the right, the (vertical) left hand wall of the knife cut defines the left wall your socket. So the left side of your saw teeth should just kiss, not graze, this. The resultant kerf is removed from the leftmost part of the waste - which includes the (bevel-bruised) right hand wall of the knife cut.

Do do the DT a day thing - made a huge difference for me, though I'm still improving, along with practicing starting the cut (just like the attack of the first note of a piece of music is rivalled only by the decay of the last)
Am now doing the same thing with mortices and jointing.
