I asked because I have a french toothing plane that is mostly good at clogging up the mouth. So removing much wood isn't easy. So i haven't been too enthousiastic yet about toothing planes for surfacing. Nice to see yours works a lot better.

Do you have a makers mark on the iron or the body of the plane Corneel. Would also enjoy viewing this toothing plane you have mentioned.

Lukcily I had some pictures on photobucket, because all my tools are packed in boxes. I am moving my shop at the moment.

It is a Goldenberg plane. Goldenberg was situated in the Vosges, an area with a strong German influence. Their planes have the typical German look.

The problem is visible in the last picture. I was thinking, maybe the wood is too soft? When I have everything unpacked again, I'll give it a try on some harder stuff.

Wonderful looking toothing plane Corneel. I do like the look of German influence within the planes shaping. very comfortable within the hand. I purchased a Goldenberg smoother from an ebay seller in France a few years ago. Its made from very hard Cormier wood. A beautiful looking plane. Its has an intriguing chip breaker adjustment on it. Well designed. I should get around to posting photo's of it one day.

My suggestion to overcome the mouth clogging issue is to widen the mouth opening slightly. It may take a couple of go's to fine tune that clearance. Good luck.

Looks lovely Stewie. I'd like to see some close-ups of the planed wood and the blade teeth if that's possible?

Hi Noggsy. As requested.

Here is a close up of the fine toothing profile on the face of the plane iron.

This shows the back of the toothing iron with its original 13* primary bevel. Notice there is no visible evidence of the toothing profile along the front cutting edge. A secondary bevel is required in order for this profile to become exposed, and allow the plane iron to function as per its intended design.

Using a coarse diamond stone a secondary bevel has been formed allowing the toothed cutting edge to become exposed.

A medium, then fine diamond stone is then used. With a final hone completed on a flat mdf board coated in honing compound. The burred edge is then lightly removed using a coarse rag so as not to cause any flattening to the face of the toothing.

Here is a close up of the timber surface after being worked with the toothing plane. As you can see the grooves visible on the timber are extremely fine. Minimal follow up with a scraper blade or sanding medium is only required.

Thanks for the advice Stewie. I'll give it a try when the shop is back up and running.

Good to hear Corneel. I managed to take some photo's today of the Goldenberg Smoother I own. I will create a post so you can have a look.

Stewie, many thanks for that, I find the mechanics fascinating. I'm also interested in how well it leaves the surface of the wood, which seems counter-intuitive to me. Another one for the list I think :)

Your welcome Noggsy. Their a great plane to have at your disposal. I plans to build some more of these coffin shaped toothing planes with the same dimensions as this one.
