I'm sorry guys but there is too much of this sh!t going on here recently. This guy has done nothing wrong that I can see, and how the hell can those of you who have said you see no need for the product know anything when he hasn't even told us what it is yet?

Nobody seems to mention a word when another particular forum member (and this isn't a dig at this person, just an example of what I'm talking about) posts offering 'solutions' to people's queries which just happen to be for sale from his business!!!

Now I have absolutely no problem with the above mentioned person as he isn't pimping his wares in my face (and I am well aware that he also offers a lot of very good advice in general re woodworking, and I have spent a fair few of my own beer vouchers with him), but I do think it's a bit unfair that this new bloke is getting hammered. It is clear from his posting style that he isn't used to forums and the way they work so why don't we educate him rather than flaming him like he's some kind of troll.

Christ it's getting picky round here lately!

It's always been like that. The 'visitors' think they are in charge of the place. It's not a democracy. If Charley doesn't want him to post his 'invention' then he'll say so. Otherwise it's not up to us to debate what he can or can't post.

So come on Mr Collins. Let the dog see the rabbit. So to speak.

This is a very good marketing angle, don't you think ? ;)

Not sure that it is in my case Tom.

Triggered off by Mr Collins postings a few weeks back, I started to think about how to store my blades. Yesterday I started making a simple box from some old beech offcuts to bolt onto the side of the table saw to keep them in.
It will hold 60mm stack of blades vertically with thin card cut from cereal packs in between to stop the tips attacking each other.
My dado was supplied in a nice carry case but naturally that has to be locked in the gun cupboard and my ownership registered with the local constabulary.

I stick my saw blades to the front of my filing cabinet with RE Magnets. Can't see me needing a blade storage solution tbh.

unless Ive totally misunderstood the thread its a way of storing circular saw/mitre saw/table saw blades - I see no need for it as i only have one per machine and they stay on the machine - if i had more for any reason i'd leave them in the packets in a drawer with some silica gel - no need for a fancy storage facility IMO

that said thats just my opinion and i have no personal beef with FR posting his product if its okay with the mods/charley for him to do so

i totally agree with you tom , it isnt a democracy - as i said above charley makes the rules, the mods enforce the rules, and the rest of us ought to abide by the rules.

however tony is a moderator so surely his statement as to why there is a problem counts as the ops team "saying so" and shouldnt be open to debate.

If I'm thinking of the same person , isnt he a paid advertiser as well as a forum member - certainly his buisness is frequently on the banner ads.

My blades hang on nails pinned to the door of a wall haging tool cab , ive never really thought about a storage solution to protect them so im very interested in seeing this :D

If i needed another way to store them in sure i would have made something myself , that said i like people who are striving to change things and i wish mr collins every success with his blade storage solution , although i think he may be making something that people dont need :?

Thanks for the comments on your blade collections and how you prefer to store them. It would have been really good to have read this info at the start of the thread, but all advice and comments on blade storage and safe handling is useful and much appreciated as is your advice on forum usage.

I'm off to fit out a dentist surgery should keep me busy for a while and help pay the bills.

Cheers

Reading this provokes the thought.. As the business part of a saw is teeth why is the guy who looks after them not a saw dentist?

Hi BSM, yep he may well be, and as I say I personally have no problem with him, and didn't really intend to highlight this, it was merely an example of what appear to be double standards on occasion.

My comments, probably badly worded, were more around the fact that we should be initially putting people straight on forum etiquette ratherthan the current tendency (in some, not all, quarters) of jumping on them like a ton of bricks.

Repeat offenders on the other hand deserve whatever they get...

One blade is probably enough for treewood, Nigel Voysey (Machining Wood) suggests a rip for everything as being most efficient. You might want another for dimension sawing, ply, veneered board, etc that you intend to use straight from the saw. I store mine (all one dia.) vertically in an open topped mdf box, the blades dropping down into kerfed slots to keep teeth separate. Carbide is brittle!

.. is there another kind, have I missed something?

sorry, couldn't resist

Even though it has been a bit like being; sentenced, hung, drawn and splattered for a crime that hadn't even been committed, I have felt guilty not letting those who would have liked to have seen the pics the chance to view them, so I contacted Charlie a second time at the start of the week (the first was in March 09 on that occasion I got no reply) by e-mail and p.m. to ask if it was ok to post them, I have had no reply this time either. I’m wondering now if I am contacting him in the proper way it’s just I don’t see any other.
Reminds me of the T.V. show “Charlie’s Angels” that was on years ago the main guy in that show was also called Charlie, yet he never actually appeared in it or a least not to my knowledge, still the angels made up for that.

Cheers. enjoy what’s left of Saturday and have a great Sunday.

Charleys last post here was 19th June! - maybe he has gone underground leaving the moderators to mind the shop?

There is a sticky on this section Site Updates, News, Errors, Comments and Suggestions, where you can post a query to be addressed by the next moderator to come on duty. That might work.

HTH

It seems Charley wants to play a very silent role in this forum. I suggest you contact the moderators.

Wouldn't be of much benefit, Wizer, as you said:

You may be surprised but I agree.

Like some with planes etc, I'm pretty passionate about c.s.bs. (among other things) There are as many different types as there are; hand-planes, chisels, hand-saws, etc if treated right and used properly they are the most useful tools in a workshop, a lot of you guys are missing out owning only the one.
Thing is; I know you wouldn't use a tenon saw to rip a plank or use a spoke shave to smooth a large piece of wood, neither would you store them in a way they could get damaged, I'm the same with me c.s.bs. ok I'll say it before someone else does; I may be in the wrong forum.

Cheers

the thing is

a) charley has already made the position clear on comercial activity in the site rules

and

b) the moderators are the arbiters whether or not you are breaking said rule - so contacting them will clarify your position.
