Hi all, I’m looking to buy a second hand chain mortiser for one job ( an oak porch). I’ve had a look round and there a few cheap ones about 300-400, but would they do the job? Is it easy to sharpen the chains (I’ve sharpened chain saw chains). I’ve noticed replacement chains are very expensive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have a very old one under a bench somewhere, it may be an Elu and has a transformer in the lead. I seem to remember it worked ok and has a spare chain..maybe! I think it just needed a rubber grip making for the vice clamp. It's probably a collectors item but I could dig it out if you're interested.

I will dig it out this afternoon and check what's what ....
Pictures in reverse order!!
I plugged it in and plunged into very seasoned oak and it worked well.....for me I would check the wiring and check if it needs greasing. There is 1 rubber boot/grip missing but a bit of rubber and evostick should be fine. It's very heavy and rather wonderful, I think it must be worth £150.
