Hi

I've recently purchased one of these beasts second hand. All looking good now I've set it up. BUT, it is going trough 13amp fuses like no ones business! The fuse goes generally when I've stopped the motor which is a slight puzzle.

As you can tell from my questions below, I'm not an electrician or even electrically minded. My limit is putting plugs on cables! So:-

1. Am I trying to cut too much of too hard a timber. Mostly at the moment Evergreen Oak Quercus Ilex a few years old?
   
   
2. I'm using a 3m extension lead, fully extended, is this an issue?
   
   
3. I'm having a new outlet installed soon, should this be fed by a higher rated cable?
   
   
4. Are there higher amp fuses that I should be using? If so, what. The info from Axminster states it is a 240volt motor.
   
   
5. Would I be better having a commando socket connection?
   
   
6. Failing this, where can I buy cheap, long lasting 13amp fuses!!

Some of these larger models do stipulate a 16 amp supply, ie round blue plug so is your model one of these ?

"Failing this, where can I buy cheap, long lasting 13amp fuses!!" No such thing, the fuse is there for protection and you might be pulling excess current so the fuse is just doing it's job.

My understanding is most of the "Plus" models are all 240v with a single phase 2Hp (1.5KW) motor.

On paper that suggests the maximum draw should be 6.25A (let's be conservative and round this up to 8A to account for other system resistances, etc.).

A 13A fuse will work with a 240v device that draws no more than 3KW (P= IV); there should be a blue sticker on the back of the machine that tells you the motor voltage and power (and number of phases). If it's more than 3KW you're using a too low rated fuse, and you'll also need a more meaty 16A socket as most domestic cables & sockets are rated to 13A only.

As already noted by Spectric if it's constantly tripping 13A fuses then it's drawing more than 13A , and to me that suggests this is an electrical fault and needs investigating by someone who knows what they are doing...

As you say this runs fine and only blows the fuse when you switch it off further suggests electrical fault; the motor will max out its power draw when its running at full speed, at which point an under-rated fuse should trip as you'd be drawing more than the 13A its rated to. The fact you can cut through hard timber withouth drawing more than 13A (and tripping the fuse) suggests you've got the correct fuse but an electrical fault somewhere in the machine...

The electrician will provide the correct cable size required for the job, if having a "new socket" then is this going to be an extra 13 amp socket taken from the existing system or a better solution would be to get a new supply from the board to a 16 amp socket. The reason why the 16 amp socket is wired from the board is that the 16 amp plugs are unfused so you cannot just fit one into an existing circuit.
