we're in a similar boat there. I just lost my job too and so am looking for new one, however, I have the slight advantage of having a red CSCS card.

I agree with the craft fairs idea, you can create a bit of a portfolio to show prospective employers and it will show that you have been doing stuff since loosing your job.



However... I would advise looking into the idea of gaining a driving liscence, even for the sel-employment route it would be useful but when it comes to finding employment it appears to be invaluable. I am finding it very hard to find a new job without one, in the last week alone I've had 4 employers turn me down after saying that if I had a lisence they'd have employed me...
 
Thanks for the support and advice peoples. I must admit, having spent far too much of the past 30 years working for grasping, grabbing, stupid, lying, cheating, stupid, crazy, gormless, halfwits, the idea of being self employed does have a lot of merits, however, it would mean working for a right cruel b*****d!
