Hello All,

I've just bought a Stanley #53 spokeshave from Ebay (having followed a recent spokeshave thread here last week!) and have started to clean it up. However, I have come to a stop trying to remove the adjustable mouth part.

The 2 pivot pins at the side of the frame are rusted and as they don't appear to be screws, the only way I can see to remove them is to drill them out. This seems a bit drastic.

Is there a trick to removing the adjustable part? I wonder if there is a hidden groove each side of it which allows it to be sprung out?

All my searches have drawn blanks, do any of you know how to remove this part please? :?

Yes, David,

you can remove it. There are tapered pins. Take a nail and hit from inside to outside. I showed it on my blog. Only german description, but a few international pictures.

Whowza! Deliberate use of slow exposure, giving motion blur on a step-by-step. That's most impressive, and nicely done.

David,
Should you wish to upgrade this excellent spokeshave, Hock make a replacement blade for the modern equivalent spokeshave still made by Kuntz (James Krenov recommends this). The Stanley may need a small amount of filing to fit the thicker bade but not usually much after the blade has been flattened. I got mine direct from California as no one seemed to stock them over here.
Jon.

Pedder,

thank you very much - I have now got it apart.
I was surprised that so many ready the thread (94 last night and 199 by tonight) and you were the only one that knew the secret.

JonBikeBod, thanks for your advice as well, I'll have a little fettle and see how well I can get it working before I think of a new blade. However, I have 2 Clico blades in myStanley #5 1/2 and #7 planes and the difference is huge so I may well end up doing as you suggest.

Thank to you both

You will probably be better off with a replacement blade. The newer blades from Stanley are c*** to be honest, they don't hold and edge. The old Stanley blades are excellent but often have either been replaced by a newer c*** blade or have been mistreated on a grinder and lost their flatnesses and hardness.

I've read you post and have not answered whilst knowing the removal 'trick'., the answer was already given by that time.

Hello David

in fact I put the same question on another forum a few months ago and got the answer. That's the way fora work: trade knowlegde.

From what I read: if you replace the blade with a Hock blade, you might have to reduce the mouth thickness a little bit.

Kind Regards
Pedder
