Found this on a job I was working on
Was this cover for tap on gas lighting, can't find much info online

I would guess it was mounted on the floor next to a fire and under the lid would have been a gas valve with a bayonet fitting to plug a gas poker into, saves kindling etc just light the poker which had a “blade” of about 8” with holes in it out of which came the lit gas, pushed in amongst the coal for easy lighting.
