On a diamond stone?

Or abrasive paper on a flat surface.

OK there are esoteric ways and materials to flatten an oilstone, but if you want simple....Silver sand as in playpit sand, concrete paving slab, some water, elbow grease nice big wide figure of eights because it will wear the suface of the slab too. There are some who will say that it won't be true dead flat but if you make big enough cicles eights etc it'll be flat enough. It worked for me and my black hard arkansa done this way is one of my best stones.

Of course, you will have to abduct a small boy. Your local primary school should have some that are surplus to requirements, and most of them would never be missed.

Tried it, got bored after an hour with little to show for my efforts, binned stone.

They'd probably want fifty quid today. That's if you can get them to do it at all.
