With regard to my test on Olsen blades. I had made a mistake when I made my order and clicked on the wrong supplier. I should have clicked the wooden teddy bear company but got another supplier, both sites are quite similar hence the mistake. I had quite a shock when I received an invoice the following day and saw I had been charged $30 for postage.

I sent the company an e-mail explaining that the cost was very excessive and quoted that two other suppliers ( wooden teddy bear and Mike’s workshop) only charged around $10 for postage and that they got here in the UK a lot quicker than their system. I waited two weeks. I finally had a reply from the supplier I dealt with and enclose a copy of their reply below, which took some believing.

Geoff,
I don’t have an answer for you except that most times the 30.00 USD we charge does not cover the cost .
Please see the attached samples. One of them being your last shipment You paid 30.00 USD and the Actual cost was 50.24 USD
The other sample is for a gentleman in Israel. He paid 30.00 USD and the actual cost is 48.79 USD. Maybe larger companies can
Afford only 10.00 and consume the balance of that cost. That is not the case we us. We try very hard to give the retail shopper
The best for their money. The flat rate of 30.00 USD rarely covers the entire cost.

Kind Regards

My friend bought a LCD protector from Adorama in America for his camera... the cost was around £12.00 and he got it from Amazon US site he clicked on the link to buy it now. Later the same day he checked his bank and they had charged him approx $95.00 postage! he tried to cancel the order and they said it was too late to cancel as it had been despatched. It arrived around a month later and was cheap and flimsy build and a total ripoff.
I always double check everything after hearing this.

Geoff,

Maybe they use different postal companies - if they ship a lot they may get a better rate.
Had a package sent from Texas to UK - $25 and it was only a large envelope which was quite light.

Also, some companies manage to negotiate better rates for volume posting. That is to say somebody sending 1000 packages a week sometimes get a more favourable rate than someone sending 20.
Even so, £20 for a small package is quite painful isn't it!

So e of it is to do with the courier and what international partners they have. For example DHL have their own aircraft so if you buy something from New York then the chances are it will go on their own plane. Others use a partner say BA so if you go from a BA hub to the UK it's probably not too bad. However postage can be a scam, so you should always check the total cost including postage. I've often found a cheap item but with £30 postage. When I can also find the item for say £5 more but with postage at £5 as well.

Two week cool off, means you can reclaim all of the costs, look at the small print they can ask you to pay for the return. If you pay by pay pal, you can raise a claim if they fail to comply. Credit cards you need to have spent over £100 on the item, not £100 on a number of items.

Hope it helps

2 week cool off won't apply to purchases from the USA will it?
