If anyone has got this Axminster jig I'd welcome any advice on calibrating it to the right bevel. Current advice is - trial and error. Currently can't see the advantage over a simple tool rest and a wooden bevel angle jig. Can't afford to have half an iron in dust on the workshop floor.

The best way is to use the existing angle on your chisel/ gouge to set the jig platform angle. Rest the chisel on the jig platform and when the bevel is flat against the grinding wheel, lock the jig platform in place.
My experience of this particular jig is that the platform tends to swivel slightly no matter how tightly you lock it.

Sounds like good advice. I'll certainly watch out for it swivelling as you describe.
