On some of my tools- my metabo sander for instance- there is some nice flexible, rubbery and soft cable. I would like to get some for wiring up a motor. What is it called and what size would I need? (Motor is 0.5hp 240v)

Google Rubber Cable suppliers, which is the stuff you're after. Places like TLC or Edmundsons will have it. Might find it in Screwfix or Toolstation, too.

Not sure exactly of the spec, but you could play it safe and go for 2.5mm.

Cheers
Stu

I think the cable needs to carry only 1.6 amps so 2.5sq.mm would be over rated and may be difficult to terminate on the tool. calculations are 1 hp is 746 watts ,watts equals volts x amps plus small round up for type of device powered.

thanks. the stuff that steve linked to looks like what i had in mind

I ask for HO5RN-F or HO7RN-F when replacing the cheapo PVC cable. It's the neoprene sheathed stuff that stays flexible at lower temps. Some sparks call it Pirelli rubber cable.

Remember to size the cable to whatever protects that circuit, in this case motor. So if its on a 20 amp breaker the cable needs to be able to take that current.
As previously recommended the H07RN-F Cable is very good, go to a local wholesaler to see what they stock, could also enquire about Arctic Flex.

Hope this helps.
