Im still in trouble with that support I am trying to give elederly neighbour. I uninstalled aol broadband and reinstalled using the disk and the reinstall went cleanly.

However when I tried to get a connection a message comes up telling me no dialing tone and unable to connect.

So went to aol support and they started running router checks and it transpired that an ip number could not be obtained doing an "ipconfig" dos set up.
They say the cable from router to telphone connection must be damaged or faulty. (quite possible it runs underneath fitted carpets and into a hallway bt box.)

The cable is the heavy armoured type with square connectors either end, can anyone tell me what is the title of this cable and any link to the specific item on the web? It is not the oblong type of connector I am used to.

Is it like this?

If so a quick trip to pc world will be nice and easy fix, or can be bought from here.

Is the line filter fitted in between the phone line and modem as sometime that may be the cause of no connection

Are you intending to create a dial up connexion or are you trying to connect by broadband, because if you are trying to connect to broadband you are clicking on the wrong connexion icon. Not that I know anything about AOL other than it's a pain from what people have said.

Alan

Or is it like this.

If it is the cable between the phone socket and router then this is the normal type, RJ11.

They can be found here.

Thanks Raggy, its more like the second posting the RJ11.
I will hunt around my contacts locally and see if I can borrow a lead to test if it really is the problem, not that I doutbt aol

Woodyallan, when I reinstalled I double clicked i/e and got the dial up type aol box which had three symbols.
no.1 worked OK
no2 is where I get the no connection message
never got the no.3 option.

I was fairly sure that you said that she had a broadband router "on 24/7". If this is the case then the dialing tone message means that the system is configured incorrectly and trying to connect to wrong device. To correct this in Internet Explorer:
goto Tools / Internet Options / Connections
In the Dial Up box you will probably see some connection names. Now if you are sure you do not need them i.e. not Dial up then you can either:
1. Delete them
2. Click on the Never Dial a Connection
You should also click on the LAN connection and check settings are correct - most I have come across need all options unticked, check that is the case for AOL though

It may be damaged, however check the above points before pulling it up!!

Description of cable and sounds like Ethernet or some form of TV cable supply system? If it is a BT box then normally I would expect to see a standard telephone jack. The microfilter would be plugged into this then the extension lead into the Router

If this of no help any chance of a picture or two of connections etc

Cheers :D
Tony

Thanks Tony,
the asdl filter is going into the bt socket on the wall and the ethernet cable plugs which have two square ends I recall went to bt and router the other end. The set up is like a wiring jungle nightmare.
So far I have had two bottles of wine and one box of Cadburys chocs.(which I gave to my wife) so feeling a bit of a rotter seeing I havent solved the problem.
I recall setting the connection tab in properties to your suggestion.

DW: did you get this sorted out yet?
Where in Devon are you? I have boxes of cables and should be able to find the right one if we knew which it was.

Jim

Many thanks for your thoughts, I'm down at
Torbay. I have got a contact (he is away at the moment) and I am sure he will be able to sort me out with a cable.

That's fine, if you were a little closer (I'm on the Somerset/Devon border) I would have been happy to pop over if I could help, but in any case, if your pal can't lay his hands on a cable I should be able to help.
PM me and I'll give you a phone number. Hope it comes right

Jim

Thanks again, at the moment it is up to her family, its is going to be a big job, the cable goes under fitted carpets and across a hallway.
If I can get hold of a short length I would just like to get her a connection to prove it is the cable before they undertake a major change.
In the meantime she has a daughter with internet so she can get some internet use.

If this is what you are looking for - Broadband ADSL Modem Cable
a25ba_new.jpg

They are available at Maplins Here3,5 and 10metres from £5.49 - £9.99. Should also be able to pick them up made to length at any reasonable PC supplier

Edit: DW, there is an AOL Broadband tutorial: Check your physical setup Here May offer some insight!

As Alan says. If its asking you for a dial up tone it sounds a little like the old 56k modem software.

Are you using a USB modem (small 3" box) or a router (larger 8"+) because if its the latter then you can check it directly by entering the routers own 'set up page' Its information held in the router hardware in the from of 'web pages'. To access the pages just type the IP address of the router in the address bar of internet explorer. The Ip will be something like 192.168.0.X (X is 0 or 1 or 11 or 100) - the manual will tell you.

Also it may not be connecting because there isn't ADSL filters on every phone in the house.

If you are using a router you could try switching the power off for about 30 seconds. It works on mine

Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools, Internet Options, Connections. Make sure that the radio button labelled "Never dial a connection" is the one in operation. If not, click it, then try connecting again.

It was the 8" box. it has an aeirial although the set up is using a lead from box to lap top.
The lady says the internet has never worked since broadband was purchased in August.
And not being used to AOL I am having to find my way as well. So I will borrow a lead to do a test and if it works then, someone in the family can then take over.

PS did that Argee.
also did disconnections.

So this router is connected to the PC via a network cable?

And you have gone through the setup manual to get it set up correctly or use the CD that came with it.

Does it have lights on the router. Are they all green? IS the "connected to the internet" one lit up? ..heh sry about all the questions.

Yep three green lights, 1st then the 4th number lights up and the first of the atenae lights as well.
3 in all and agreed with the aol support bloke.

 So, in trying to be helpful and do a "good deed" you find yourself in a situation where you do not know for sure what is working correctly and what is not. For instance you do not know:
a. Is the laptop set up correctly with required drivers for all device installed and working as they should?
EDIT: Go into Device Manager and check that there are no yellow exclamation marks against any devices - especially Network Devices
b. As there has never been a connection and assuming Router supplied when broadband upgrade - how can you be sure that this is working correctly?
c. Is the router set for direct cable connection to the laptop? Is there a switch to set either wireless or direct? You will need to study the manual.
d. Double check the Internet settings to make sure you have disabled Dial up services. You may also wish to disable the built in modem for good measure through Device Manager.
e. How can you be sure that AOL has enabled the service?

Under these circumstances I would want to get back to just a basic set up to start and confirm connectivity:

1. Move laptop and router to be near to the BT master socket. That is the one you will need - at this stage do not try in extension socket.

2. Turn off/disable all antivirus, antispyware and firewall on laptop. This is a temporary measure until you are up and running. Until you get a connection you are under no risk. This type of software can often lead to installation issues.

3. Unplug every telephone/fax device in the house.

4. Plug your new cable into the router, microfilter and BT socket and connect the router to the laptop (ideally with a new/tested cable as well)

5. Follow router manual instructions for order of turning on devices - it may be turn router on first then Laptop or the reverse.

6. At this stage do not try and load the AOL software but try to link to the router directly.
Open Internet Explorer type the following into the address bar 192.168.0.1 and press enter (this is the default IP for most Netgear routers - if it does not do anything check manual to confirm IP correct). You should then see a setup page open asking for a username and password - unless someone has changed them they will be the defaults specified in the manual (Usual default Username is admin and the default Password is password.
Getting to this stage confirms that you have a proper connection between laptop and router - it does not confirm that you have access to the net yet!

7. From this point I would follow the setup instructions using CD and attempt to configure router and get on the net
