It looks as though I have hit an unlucky patch. I have just got two speeding tickets in two weeks! Both of them in my van and both while going to a job. Both of them were 37 MPH in a 30 zone! :roll: First one is an awareness course but the second will now be points and a fine, not to mention insurance going up! I have been driving for over 30 years and this is the first time I have got a speeding ticket or for that matter any points on my licence! I am gutted and am now watching the speedo more than the road ahead. :roll:

Yes, that the dangerous aspect of the lower speed limits. Difficult to keep modern cars down to 30mph for long periods on open clear roads.

I've been driving for 54 years without getting a ticket (so far). :shock:

Yes bad luck indeed, I have been driving for 53years without any speeding tickets, but I have been pulled over three times, and just given a warning, so I can’t claim to be innocent of speeding, just very lucky I guess. :roll:

The wanders of modern technology, just wish I could work out how to set the clock ?, but when we drop back to GMT it will be correct again. :?

I've said it before. It's not speed that kills. It's the wrong speed at the wrong time for the wrong road/pedestrian conditions. And please don't get me started on Average Speed checks down empty motorways.

hi i know how you feel i got done doing the same ,i know what you mean about watching the speedo i was glued to it when i got done but in time you start to go back to your old ways .
i was well p***ed when i got done .
since then things have calmed down and touch wood i have not got any more points for a while now

You can almost certainly set your speed limiter to 33mph without breaking the speed limit. The limiter takes it's speed from your speedo which is set to read fast by the manufacturer - usually around 10% at 30mph. Check it against your sat-nav (if you have one) which will give your speed accurately on a straight and level'ish road.

I'm reliably informed that HM Constabularies will always allow at least a 10% margin in speeding - so you may get stopped for 33 in a 30 limit but you are unlikely to get prosecuted as this tends to be the tolerance in speedometers and they want to avoid any protracted arguments in court as to this not being within your control. Taken to it's limit, this means you are probably OK doing 77mph on a motorrway - but as Roger S says, it's all about the circumstances. However at 77mph on a motorway, you are going to get passed by an awful lot of other drivers.
If it helps at all, I did get stopped doing 35mph on my bike (as in push bike) in a 30 mph limit and the picture on the policeman's face when I took my helmet off and he saw an old git was riding was priceless - he actually said he wasn't going to do me as I would wear it as a badge of pride!

Better safe than sorry, and most roads where I drive, it is not safe to drive up to 30 in the 30mph zone, so will stick with 29mph.

I no longer drive on any motorways, but when I did I never went over the 70mph limit, and yes there were many vehicles going faster than that, so maybe the campaign to raise the limit to 80mph is will founded, but not that concerned personally, as I will not be driving on any motorway, about thirty miles from home is now my limit, and then there has to be a very good reason to venture that far. 8-[

I was once driving through a local estate when a boy, probably 8 or 10 years old, ran out in front of me. I have no idea how I missed him. It really shook me up. I stopped, of course, I wasn't fit to drive for a few minutes. I shouted at him, his mother told me not to shout at her son. He ran off laughing. He is living on borrowed time.
I was driving below 30mph, I dread to think how I would feel if I had killed him if it was his own fault, let alone if it had been mine.
I'm all for low speed limits in built-up areas. Often 30 is too high.

I've never really understood the argument that one has to watch the speedo to the extent that the watching of the road suffers.
Is it that hard to keep to 30MPH without staring at the speedo? If so, it much be way more difficult, and thus dangerous to try and keep to 40 or 70. Maybe it's time to simply make cars illegal.

It is 10% + 2 so at 30mph you should not be prosecuted until you reach 35mph but it's only a guideline.

At 37 mph your speedo would have been reading 39 or 40mph so you thought you were actually going faster than the 37 you were done at. Not sure how you can feel bad about it. You took a chance and got caught.

Since getting two tickets in one day, one of which allowed me to go on a speed awareness course, I have found that just leaving the car in 3rd gear when in a 30 makes it SUPER EASY to know when I'm approaching 30 - engine noise - SIMPLES

I used to have second sense when driving in the past for a living and never got caught.

I think all makes will do that.

The ones I've used, indicate the maximum (legal) speed of the road being travelled and beep when the speed is exceeded - thats if the sound is on?

I don't really need a good map system at my age, I've been everywhere !!!!!!!!!! :wink: :wink:

My wife actually got caught twice within 10 mins by the same camera van. She went down the hill to put petrol and then up the hill home.

Didn't see it either time.

She got a speed awareness course for one and 3 points for the other. The fine is due to rise from £60 to£100 in a few days I think.
