This was done just as a bit of an experiment/exercise as I haven't touched the lathe for over a week  Its a bowl with a hollow form inside(one piece)
Spalted sycamore with ebonised walnut finial, finished in sanding sealer rubbed in and not buffed(looks like an oil finish)

Ok its a bit weird and the finial is a wee bit on the large side.

JT, what a lovely piece ,where on earth do you get your ideas from I love it 8) 8) :D :D
May have a try at that ,if you dont mind.

Hmmmmm................

arkward bit of tool control at the inner intersection JT, not struck on the finial or its stark contrast colour, personally think lower contour lid in darker complimentary colour wood would look better. (picking up the colours in the spalted wood)

I like the concept. Like Chas I'm not too sure of the finial, perhaps if you had a small foot the same colour to balance it? Certainly something to follow up and experiment with. Keep 'em coming.

TBH the finial is a cast off from a previous project that just happened to fit the hole perfectly  so was never made for this, I will make one for it proper tommorrow(if I get a chance)

I think I will ebonise the new finial though as the bit of sycamore is so spalted and has so many colours that I think black will be the only colour that will work :?

Boysie, go for it 8)

Pete, good idea a matching foot would improve it I think 8)

Chas, I finished the under bit of the HF with the skew which is not my favorite tool by a long long way  and a nervous moment which for once paid off.

I love the concept of it JT .... its a 'challenge the perceptions of convention' piece, and its great ! ...
Any bits of fine tuning you're looking to do to it can only futher improve it... and thats all to the good. 8) :D
Great bit of thinking ! 8) 8) 8)

Very good JT, I like this.

That hard transition between hollow form and bowl - I use a 1/2" or 1/4" spindle gouge with a fingernail grind (swept back wings) and it is very effective. It's not my idea, I saw Bob Hamilton use this technique on his suspended bowls. I have found that I can cut down the curve of the hollowform (in this case) and then continue the cut by shear scraping away from the hollowform onto the bowl. Probably a bowl gouge with a fingernail grind would do the same but I have tried it and find the spindle gouge easier to control. I have tried using a skew to do this but my heart just couldn't take it.

Hi Johnny,

Nice idea- Like the finial also, but maybe a little slimmer.
