After the quality advice recieved here to my last question I shelled put for a Ryobi 4" sander, speeds things up no end. I gave it a good test drive today. 36m of softwood shelving in one session, both sides agdes and ends. it took a while but got a good result and didn't blow up the sander.

BUT, the cheapo belts I bought with were another story I got through 4 belts on this one job. They were Silverline or something similar, ie cheap and naarssty. How long should quality belts last and can anybody reccomend a manufacturer. I now you get what you pay for and mind doing that.

Cheers guys, off for a cider to wash out my dusty throat.

Last thought I was impressed by the dust collection on the sander, I had to empty it about every 2o minutes. Obviously it works.

They last as long as they do..... but the better ones do last longer. Look for Klingspor, Norton or Mirka belts and you'll find they are a lot more durable. I've used Klingspor for a few years and they last well. What you might like to try is running the belt against a crepe cleaner from time to time to "unload" it:

This one is from Scott & Sargent (£13 + VAT), but they're quite commonly available.

If you attach a cheapo vacuum cleaner to it you'll find working somewhat less dusty and more pleasureable
