Someone working for a charity made a rather obvious suggestion (once you've read it) on the local FB - they get inundated with children's toys in the new year when everyone clears their children's stuff because of the new stuff they've had for Xmas - it would be helpful for people struggling if the clearouts for charities could be done before Xmas rather than afterwards. Just a thought.

There is a slight logical flaw in that.

When little Johnny sees his cupboard bereft of his current favourite toys on December 1st, with what will he play for the next 24 days?

Rather spoils the surprise if mum and dad say, "stare at the wall for a couple of weeks. There will be new ones delivered by 25th" (unless Santa is using Evri this year).

Perhaps you could recast what in principle is a good idea into something more practical when considered from a childish point of view.

A gradual thinning out of the toy cupboard in November could work nicely. Many kids have so many toys these days they probably wouldn't even notice.

Me too though not often enough however I'd strongly object to someone else doing it for me.

I would say that kids get far to much and don't really appreciate it going by how much stuff gets dumped in the new year after xmas.

One of the most distressing aspects of Xmas is the realisation that hundreds or thousands of ££££ has been spent on:

• packaging which finds its way into the dustbin on the day,
• swiftly followed by most of the plastic cr*p bought at outrageous expense which either falls apart or fails to stimulate little Jonny or Janice

Make the younger some proper wooden toys - play kitchen. musical instrument (even something to bang with another piece of wood), pencil box, easel, etc etc etc. Encourage relatives to pay you to produce nice things of lasting value.

For older kids buy them tools - blunt for the under 14's, sharp for those older. Buy them an oilstone - all they will ever need to get a razor edge on almost anything freehand. They can then be productive around the house rather than thumb exercise on the latest play station slumped in front of the TV.

One can always dream!!
