Anyone been sold dodgy shellac flakes recently?

Bought some Shellac (Liberon blond de-waxed) from amazon recently 'cause the price was good. Turned out they were too old and wouldn't dissolve properly, and went streaky when applied.

Sent them back and tried Axminster (identical brand and type). Same problem. Complained and sent them back and got a replacement lot. Same problem.

I'm just wondering whether there is a dodgy batch out there or something. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't want to order another dud lot from somewhere else. It's really messed up my week....

Haven't had this problem, but you could try ordering some from Dictum in Germany. Theirs are not Liberon; I have had several batches from them without any problems.

I thought shellac, in flake form, lasted indefinitely. is there any other variable that could be causing the issue?

You'd think the flakes would last for ever but in fact they only have a shelf life of about two years. Better than the ready made stuff mind you, but I might resort to that this time...

it certainly makes you wonder about the economy of buying flake if you are not a regular user of the stuff. In my case, probably better to buy the smallest bottle of ready made, because half a bag of flake going off negates much of the saving. Sounds like you use a fair bit more though!

I have had no problem with flakes going off and I do keep them for a long time. I suspect that the Liberon flakes you have bought were sub-standard (contaminated?) from the word go.
