any tips on sharpening shoulder plane blades?

Find a jig that will hold it square and use it. One long bevel cuts 'sweeter' any way (see Planecraft, they were right), and if ever there were a plane you'd like to cut sweetly this is the one.

I've taken to grinding and honing these freehand and the results are not as good as when honed with a jig. They're acceptable, but not as good. I should go back to a jig.

The peining of the dovetails (with a big hammer) having introduced a certain amount of twist !

The important thing is that if you know what is happening, it is easy enough to work with, and not completely fuc£ed.
