You'll be missing a bunch of posts from that thread (and the real story) as they were deleted by a moderator who realised he had overstepped the mark, and deleted the whole sub-thread.

yeah quite possibly but i dont really care that much about the "real" story - I like this forum as it is and my experience of forum life as a whole ( there are other non wood work forums which i mod on , and /or have been long term member of) is that if people dont want to fall in line with the wishes of mods and admin then the forum is better off without them and they are better off starting their own site elsewhere.

I have no problem with alf etc and i'm sure their forum is also worth a look but I would hate to see this forum degenerate into frequent slanging matches as a result of having a discontented minority back on board - regardless of who was right or wrong originally.

The problem with badgers is that they knock your wheels out of allignment...

Aidan

yeah there is that - tho hedgehogs are working on perfecting the perfect tyre piercing spine ... just how many more heroic hoggy deaths will it take until a prototype works :D

Maybe you'd be better off not talking about it at all then?

That's what most people do.

Especially as the person who really stirred up the trouble might still be here, depending on your perspective.

All i was saying is that forums work best without arguments, factions, or those that set out to cause them. but you are right i'm not going to talk about it anymore - i'm off to talk woodworking , which is why we are all here... right ?

yeah well , i didnt start the thread bringing it up again - and i'm as entitled to express an opinion as anyone else.

Also i dont see you following your own advice

All I was saying if you don't want to know the full story, don't pretend you do.

I don't raise it, but it still irritates me - this place has gone downhill, and the two places don't add up to what was.

I didnt mean to give the impression that i knew the full story or that the other side of the debate was less valid.

I'm not looking for an argument with you , or with anyone else which is why i editted my last post.

my take is that this is a pretty good forum now and i'd like to see it stay that way ... i cant comment on whether it was better before . Now lets just agree to differ and get back to what we are actually here for ....

Nor me, sorry the 'pretend to know' was a bit harsh, it's just that what with the way it played out only about ten people probably saw the real cause because of the way mod powers were used to erase history, so the history as it appears looking back on here is misleading.

I like this place too, it's still got a **** a lot of going for it, just lost some very experienced people, and some balance in some things. Still one of my favourite places on the web.

Sounds bloody childish to me.....
If you re read this thread you sound like a load of women at a W.I. meeting.....ok so now men can attend, so what.....

The lot of you wouldn't behave this way infront of your children!

See Me after school for detention.

AND CALL IT A DAY, EH.....

Now get your jim jams on and off up to bed,
Night Night, children,
See you in the morning.

The worrying thing is that many forum kickoffs are that trivial - theres something about the PC which leads to vitriolic exchanges which would never occur if we were all in the pub.

That is so very true. Also, because there is a certain level of anomity on an internaet chat forum people often jump into 'abusive' mode when in real life they never would. It's easy to swear at someone who can't take you outside and rearrange your facial features init

And to Dave in Wyndham, yes I did say IIRC and yes maybe it was at the time a heated debate and all sorts of accusations were bandied around but it really seems trivial now. So some Mod got a bit carried away, so the OP had a bit of 'help' that not everyone gets, so what :?:

Life is too short to let such things worry you, and in any case my blood pressure is too high anyway and I have to be careful I don't get into any argumentive situations.

Jake - I don't think we've ever agreed about anything, but I agree 100% with what you said above.
On many forums I've visited I usually end up asking myself what the **** are the members on this planet for  but with the exception of this one very old thread UKW has always been a very pleasant place to drop in for a bit of chat and banter.

I wonder if this isn't at the heart of the problem.

I contribute occasionally to a couple of American woodworking forums which insist that only real names are used - no anonymous 'user names'. Because everyone knows who everyone else is and where they live the conversation is very civilised, polite and friendly...

...if that's what you want!

Losos, sorry - by quoting your phrase 'storm in a teacup' it naturally appeared that I was directing my comments at you, whereas I meant them in much more general terms.

It seems a common assumption that the whole thing was about a couple of threads (which I've never actually seen since I was on holiday at the time and they were moderated before my return), in which case it probably does seem like a storm in a teacup. But there had been several disagreements and arguments leading up to then, and this seems to have been forgotten by many.

I remember from the off-forum conversations I had at the time that there had been rumblings of discontent for a while, and that is what I meant when I said that it was more like the straw that broke the camel's back.

I don't know why the topic keeps coming up here over and over again, though - I don't think anyone over the road is losing much sleep over it!

Dave

....
