Aesthetics and AV equipment

So here I am.

I'm 60 well 60 yrs and 7 months.

I've managed to get rid of the kids....at last....trouble is they and offspring keep coming back. I must be doing something wrong !!

We have managed to get our lounge into some sort of slightly stylish ( I hope) order. After years of kids stuff around we have managed to create a minimalist look which suits both my wife and I.

We have just replaced the AV kit. Plasma TV on the wall and need to find a way to add cable control and two brackets or shelves for the DVD and a Sky box...the hifi etc is in another room.

I can't find anything stylish to use. The TV tables are just horrible so a no no. Ali or stainless steel maybe the way to go.

Looked at Vogels stuff and that would be OK but still a slight cabling control issue.

Any ideas out there. What have you done and why. I'd be really interested as I can't conceive of a wooden solution to this.

We have a smoked glass low unit that houses the equipment.

To hide the cables, I've been looking at offcuts (aluminium) channels used to make exhibition stands and/or shop fittings. But that's as far as it's got....five years ago

My TV is fixed to the wall and the cables are chased into the walls. I ran the cable over to a corner of the room where there is just enough room to fit the kit. There' literally no room to fit a cabinet, I'm thinking about making a wall shelf. I'm not sure why this can't be done with wood? I do like metal and glass, but wood can look as modern and stylish. If not more in some situations.

I'm not sure this really helps but all my cables run under the floor (plus 4 speaker cables chased in the wall to feed 4 ceiling recessed speakers). I've used a couple of wall plates for the sub-woofer (one behind the amp and another over the other side of the room where the woofer sits. I've used a brush plate behind the TV too to run the cables up through from under the floor (reduces the number of breaks in the cabling).

ye I wish I'd though about something like that when we did ours. I was pre-occupied by having the boxes away from the TV, when in fact they'd be more convenient in that position. I'll probably go this route if I redecorate. Only problem would be if your room is narrow.

Pauls closer than most here. For me that is. Its all a matter of choice.

Chasing the walls would be too difficult and we've only just redecorated so I'm very resistant to that.

Under floor ain't possible as its a solid concrete underfloor. I wish the house were old enough to have real floor boards.

So Pauls idea is not too bad. Change the bottom shelf from a cabinet style to a shelf only. Trim the vertical edges with stainless or ali. Make it in Walnut with Walnut edges maybe.

I wonder also about the frame. Perhaps Paul could give me a link to where he found the image unless its his own of course.

I hadn't even thought about wireless. Great idea. I will be looking at a fewe different wireless systems eg. Sonus.

Not sure where the picture came from, I have done a couple similar with soft wood framing then clad in MDF.
One was only 140mm deep, but I had to make the plasma bracket to keep the size down.

The walnut and stainless design sound good.
