I'm going to make a pair of traditional garage doors to replace the current steel up-and-over type. I'm thinking of using either 4" x 2" or 6" x 2" for the stiles and rails or a mixture of the two. Any thoughts on what would be best? I want to make them substantial and secure. Each door will be approx 102cm wide and 201cm tall. Sorry to mix imperial and metric! Thanks.

Nothing wrong with using Pine if they will be painted? Or do you want hardwood?

Iroko will be good but I'm not sure if it's expensive. Do you have a budget in mind?

Thanks very much - most informative. I think I'll use decent quality redwood and it will cost what it costs. I'm only going to do it once so might as well do it properly first time. I'm not planning to use hardwood at the moment.

The considerations are very similar i think to making a sheeted timber gate, except perhaps you can get away with a bit less in terms of weather resistance - especially if it's pointing out of the wind.

We'd quite an extended discussion on the gate topic a month or so ago...
