Hi

I'd like to ask how something could be made. It's the old one of making 'cube ' type shelving... i.e small cubes for wine bottles or larger cubes as a bookcase...

I'm actually thinking of making something similar to the 'Guilford Buffet Hatch' on this link. (About halfway down)

http://www.reidfurniture.com/store/roi/acatalog/Guilford.html

In the bottom left of the unit there is a wine rack... how is this done? With housing or 'dado' joints?...
Or else with interlocking shelves and verticals?... hmmm, hard to describe what I mean.
Or maybe I could just use dowels given that I have an accurate way of drilling for dowels?... (Mafell DD40 doweller)

I also may have to make a much larger version of the cubes for a bookshelf.. i.e 6 foot tall, 3 foot wide... with 6 cubes tall and 3 cubes wide, no back on the unit.

Cheers
Joe

Joe, yes any one of those option would be ok. Housing, dowels, biscuits, even halving joints, it depends on your preference. There are no heavy loads involved. For the bookcase I think it would be better to use stopped housings as they are stronger. Putting a back on would also make it stronger.

Agree with Schultzy, my preference would be housings or even half cuts(can't remember the technical name) but similar to a cardboard wine box.

in the joiners shop we dovetailed the joints in finishing 12mm from the face to form a stopped dovetail, it is much stronger than rebates and dowels.
