Didn't we just have this conversation. It went badly as I recall. I shall now retire to my mountain and ignore it.

Rip off Britain?
Bloonose, had you been caught with a customs bill I doubt that you would have made such a killing, add to that the carriage costs of hand carrying by air. (isn't the personal import limit on goods £140)

To you personally it was a great saving, if you were to try and do it as a business to supply others I think you would find the profit margins slim.

I have recently been pleasantly surprised (elsewhere abroad) to find shop goods/supermarket foods on a par with UK prices, only when I realised that the local average income was a fraction of UK did the significance dawn.

It can be misleading to take isolated examples out of their overall context.

Its not just tools, as I said the clothing I purchased was the same story, A company with a store here and one in the US selling the same item made in the same place shipped to different destinations from same source. Here we pay £40, there less than $40 which is £20 approx, somebody is making big money money from us mugs, that is nothing to do with duty etc, its just what we are willing to accept ! Car's, Electronic goods I could go on and on, I have been away so haven't seen the previous thread, but feel I'm being ripped off big time......

The only thing I will say, is that if you purchase online or mail order and have goods shipped to you, the threshold is much lower at £18.

In view of the recent thread on this subject, I shall now go and join Mike.

Likewise Dave, on the subject front.
By personal, I meant hand carried, not the clearest of definitions on my part I'm afraid. It certainly came into our computations when weighing up personal gift purchases (duty allowance leaflet in hand) at the time.

(didn't make me look quite such a skinflint when browsing the 'International Diamonds & Gemstones' displays etc. )

Quite right Mike, as well as the one prior to that. I've just looked and it was only a week ago.

Cheers

Obviously wasting my time posting this, As I said have not seen previous thread or conributed to it, I stand by my comments and you are entitled to yours, seems a shame that that you wish to ignore the fact that we are being charged more for the same goods! and this is my last post on this and any other matter............

It's a shame a "Forum Newbie" should feel this way, driven away by comments made by members who ought to know better. How do we expect this forum to develop without new ideas and points of view? I appreciate that the UK/US pricing difference has previously been discussed however the tone of this thread turned to the point of being offensive which I though against the forum rules.

No doubt this will be removed by the powers that be.

Well here goes, I'll put my foot right in it.

I am inclined to agree to a certain extent with Bloonose, I have in the past bought a lot from LN, LV and Blue Spruce, I have also paid the postage and the taxes required.

On every accasion I have made a profit from buying the same overseas, in some cercumstances it has been quite large, in the case of LV and in other cases only a few pounds, but the bottom line is that I've made a few shillings.

I'm not going to enter into the argument regarding retailers importing on mass becasue I think this is a different issue, they have different challenges and overheads that need to be catered for.

Regarding Bloonose's comments about not posting anymore because he can't take criticism form other members, I feel that this is a bit childish, the whole idea of the forum is to share irrespective of reply's.

I think the point is this, a pair of jeans, a table saw, a car, anything else you care to mention, manufactured in the far east, shipped halfway round the world. If its shipped clockwise its one price if its shipped anti-clockwise its a different price. A simplified view I grant you but I too feel ripped off.

Ah but if Bloonose has 6 children plus a wife at £140 each customs allowance that equals =????????
It would almost pay to take our grandchildren away with us. :)

Perhaps one new piece of relevance in this post was that it involved hand tools. In the other thread - before it degenerated - some good points were made about different voltages, CE testing, duty, spares etc affecting both commercial and if you were unlucky personal imports.

BUT most of those issues affect power tools far more than hand tools. We do have higher employment & transport costs (& duty) than many countries which pushes up locally sold products; and the dollar has moved in our favour of late BUT that was a huge price difference. I also assume that if the items were made in the far east the USA supplier would have paid appropriate duty and catered for spares too.

Maybe it is just me but I cannot understand why if anyone dares to mention "Rip Off Britain" they are jumped on from a great height.

In this instance Bloonose stated
I have been away so haven't seen the previous thread
So give the guy a break, he is fairly new to the forum after all.

Cheers

Mike
