I cut the end of one piece to make a stake to hold our front gate open. I was horrified when I realised it was QS brown oak.

For what it's worth, Paul, you can buy brown oak today if you know where to look... :wink: I bought a load of 1" boards from Vasterns in Calne a few months ago; they appear to hold quite a lot of it in stock too! Some of the boards I picked out were quarter-sawn, although I wasn't charged extra. Prices were almost on a par with ordinary English oak; I guess it depends on where you look. :)

Beautiful tables Ed. How did you cut that bead on the rails? Is it possible to do that without a router?

It certainly is possible to do it without a router, the favourite option probably being a scratch stock. I have to admit that even as an owner of one of Newts excellent brass scratch stocks, on this occasion I used this;

If theres a lot to do and the bead is relatively deep, the easy way out is a router cutter, although its more than achievable with other means.

Its on my list of jobs to do, but making a dining table is quite a big undertaking and not anywhere near the top of my list for a year or two. Anyway, I said I'm not making any more tables for a while and I'm sticking to that :)

Cheers, Ed

Very nice work Ed they look superb, I have used a similar beading on some small tables it certainly does add an extra dimension. I don't have any IKEA furniture but one of my sons does, and I must say they seem fantastic value for money. His are also made of real wood.
