Rutlands complete door and drawer router bit set

I've just taken delivery of one of these sets. Ordered yesterday lunchtime and delivered by 9 am today...well done Rutlands. The set comprises a matched pair of rail and style cutters, a raised panel bit with back cutter, a drawer-lock bit, a reversible glue-line bit and an edge facing bit. I...

    alternative to MDF...

So not too keen then Jim? My main problem with MDF for workshop cabinets is that if it gets damp at all it will swell and start to disintegrate. That's why I vote for ply. 18 mm all round including the back and they will be bomb-proof.

    alternative to MDF...

Dan, I think 10 mm is way too thin for workshop cupboard carcasses...if you screw through a side panel into the edge of a top or bottom panel, there isn't much for the screw to grip into. I'd use 18 mm WBP ply and put them together with biscuits and carcass screws. They are for a workshop not a...

    Various advice please

I have a Triton WC2000 and have the Triton dust bag fitted. That catches a lot of dust from the saw but it sure is a dis-incentive as far as using cross-cut mode is concerned (I built a cross-cut sled instead). I also use a Wickes wet 'n dry workshop vac with a Triton dust bucket. The vac and...

How to paint polystyrene coving please ?

When I have fitted polystyrene coving in the past I put on so much adhesive that there was more than enough squeeze-out to fill most of the gaps. When the adhesive was dry I still went round it all with decorators caulk and then emulsion painted it. The paper coated stuff gives a nicer finish...

geometry question again, needing help please.

It will be a compound mitre. The exact angles will depend on whether the ends slope in at 17 degrees like the sides or not. http://jansson.us/jcompound.html

    Belt Sander

I don't know about belt sanders but I be inclined to clean up the timber with a wire brush. A cup type brush mounted in a power drill is very effective in removing surface crud without leaving the timber looking like new wood. With a belt sander you'll never get all the bit between the boards...

    Old School Woodworking

The curve on the inside face of the staves was shaped with a scorp or similar curved draw knife. The younger guy did it by placing the stave on the low bench, put his foot on it and worked with the scorp behind his heel. The two men worked the outsideof the bucket with a two man plane first of...

    Old School Woodworking

Thanks for the additional links Henning, these old films are real gems. We should look at them when we start to get excited about the latest gadgets and see what those old guys could do with pretty basic tools. I have never seen the two man planing technique either but I guess it makes sense...

    Hello guys

Hi Si, I've just caught up with this thread so wecome to the forum. I have a Triton WC2000 with the Triton saw and I like it. I've built a kitchen full of cupboards with it, complete with panelled doors and drawers. If set up well it is capable of very accurate work. Have a look at the Aussie...

    Death of my Dremel

I don't have any help to offer on the dead Dremmel front I'm afraid, but I would like to ask you about routing with the Dremmel. I was looking at the Dremmel section in B&Q the other day and I saw some of the tiny router bits. I wondered at the time what sort of projects they might be used for...

    New SCMS

My only experience of McAlister kit is a 1/2" router and that is pretty awful. I also don't have a SCMS because I couldn't afford a good quality one and I didn't trust the accuracy of the cheap ones. I ended up with Dewalt 703 which is very accurate and readily adjusted if it should ever get...

    Overriding Wickes router on/off switch

I used to use a zip tie to hold down the trigger of my Trend Tech (B&Q) router and it worked well for several years until the variable speed control failed. I don't want to hijack the thread but since we are talking about re-wiring switches, is it possible/safe to by-pass the variable speed...

The problem with short cuts, was Planing stop for thin stock

I recently saw this style of planing stop in Christopher Schwartz's workbench book. Like most great ideas it is deceptively simple. Great for thin stock and if working on thicker stock just tilt it up a bit.

The router table fence looks like it might be off a Triton router table. Thinking about it, the table saw fence might be early Triton too.

Top or Bottom bearing router bit?.

On the subject of climb cutting, I saw a video recently (on the Wood Magazine site maybe?) where the guy showed a climb cut technique he called "bump cutting". Basically all he did on the part he had to climb cut was instead of keeping the bearing in contact with the template, he literally...
