    Stainless steel fixings

That's one of the many great things about this forum, you can often get a quick answer to a question without having to spend a lot of time searching.

    Quick Question...

I've seen "Canola" oil recommended...the name stands for Canadian oil low acid, which is a variety of rapeseed oil. The low acid part refers to the erucic acid content, an omega-9 fatty acid, though I'm not sure how important that is for rust protection. Here is a Wikipedia link.

Mike, have a look at Fastfix or Screwsline

    New - Oneida Dust Pod

A cyclone spins the air round a funnel and the dust drops into the collecting bucket before reaching the filters. This means that a cyclone system will keep working at high efficiency whereas a simpler filter system will clog up and the airflow will drop dramatically. Also in cyclones, the...

    Walnut Crossbow stock

Thanks Mike, very comprehensive. We are obviously much more tightly regulated than our European cousins.

    Walnut Crossbow stock

I know it is a bit OT, but what is the legal position as regards making/owning/using a crossbow? Given the recent thread that highlighted the fact that my Opinel knife and leatherman multi-tool are both illegal for me to carry in public, I'm curious about the view the law takes about such...

    Using a Biscuit Jointer

My biscuit joiner has a fairly good fence (Freud) but I still get the best results by working with the joiner and workpiece on a flat reference surface. I generally use my home made router table top as it is pretty flat. The router table has the added advantage of having a fairly tall fence (150...

    white or yellow

Aliphatic resin is, by definition a straight or branched chain hydrocarbon compound. Polyvinyl acetate (PVA, aka carpenters glue, wood glue etc etc) is, you've guessed it, an aliphatic resin. Manufacturers may put in other additives to modify open time, initial grab etc, but to say that one has...

    Planed timber from logs?

Would splitting logs with an axe and wedges work to get them down from the round into sections that would go through the bandsaw? I've not done this myself but now I have a bandsaw with a 7" depth of cut I am tempted to give it a go. There is a small wood attached to the site where I work and...

    white or yellow

I presume it is PVA. I've not seen it with a yellow colour though, always white. Maybe the yellow is the bog standard stuff (I get that impression when Norm :norm: talks about it) and the white stuff if the waterproof one. Just guessing though.

    Pine Alcove Units

Thanks Dan, glad to hear that you got the commission. MDF it is for the cornice then. I don't want anything too ornate because the kitchen style is fairly plain frame and panel doors but I need to hide the cooker hood exhaust pipe so it will probably have to be built up with three layers of 18...

    redwood / pine - what's in a name??

Redwood is the traditional name for timber from the Scots Pine , nothing to do with Redwood trees...sequoia species I think. Some bigger B&Q warehouses stock what they list as redwood but to be honest I'd try and find a local timber merchant as the quality from B&Q is usually pretty suspect. [/i]

    Advice on scribing needed

When I did this recently I cut the panel to be scribed just as Skipdiver says and stuck it to the front edge of the wardrobe end panel with double sided carpet tape (useful for so many things in the workshop). I made sure it was parallel with the end panel by using a combination square as a...

    Pine Alcove Units

Nice work Dan, you should've kept quiet about the door, I'd never have noticed. Did you make the moulding at the top or buy it ready made. I need something to dress up the tops of my kitchen units and I'm thinking about making u a built up moulding using cove ond round over profiles. To be made...

    Sliding Table Saw

The other option to consider for cutting sheet material is The Festool system (or other hand held saw/guide rail combo). Similar price tag as a second hand Wadkin and just a tad lighter.

    £200 Bandsaw

Sorry I misread your post and thought you just meant the saw blade. I'm no expert but I have been doing some reading on bandsaws because I just bought an old cast iron benchtop model. For re-sawing and veneer sawing, I've read that you need as wide a blade as your saw will take at a high enough...

    £200 Bandsaw

Contact Ian John at Dragon Saws (just Google Dragon bandsaw blades). He certainly knows his stuff and is happy to give advice and the service is great. I ordered two blades at 11am Tuesday and they were delivered 24h later. You can place the order by phone and pay with your card or use the Ebay...

    Cordless Drill Recommendations

I have the 12V Makita drill driver...excellent tool, plenty of power for diy jobs and an excellent battery charger, which prolongs battery life. Compared with the cheapos I had before, it was a revelation, well balanced, loads of torque.

    Bandsaw Blade Types

I just ordered a couple of blades today from Dragon Saws, via Ebay. Really good and quick advice from Ian at Dragon. I also just got Mark Duginske's "The New Complete Guide to the Bandsaw" from Amazon. Should keep me occuoied for a while.

    Opinions Please

For the router table I think it depends on the type of project you want tackle. If you will only do small scale stuff, then a little bench-top router table will work just fine. If you want to do larger projects you need a table with a big surface area. Have a trawl through some of Niki's old...
