    Air Con

There's no testing or special tools needed on these cheap split units. Open the valves and that's it. They may well incorporate some type of dessicant to absorb residual moisture. ike

Beginners heavyduty(ish) workbench design on a budget.

Looks well-proportioned. What you want to aim for when its complete is mass - the heavier the better . I went a bit heavier on the sections for mine - 4"x4" legs, 4"x2" bottom rails, 6"x2" top rails (helped to mount large vice) Top is 8"x1-1/2" planks topped with 3/4" ply. Mortice and...

    Dangerous Blade Offer!

Off-topic, but have to suggest that fire extinguishers are kept either near the door inside, or as I do, outside the workshop in a cupboard. If a fire started when you are out of the building, they are much more likely to be accessible. Ike

    Hand paint

I'd go for sanding sealer base, followed by 'Spray putty' (ultra-high build filler/primer), followed with U-pol satin-black topcoat. The joints will, and the grain probably will eventually telegraph through, whatever you use, but the high-build primer will help to minimise it. Ike

    Pressure washer recommendations?

After owning several different brands of washer, they all seem to have one thing in common - they steadily lose their 'peak' pressure from new. Those impressive specs quoting 120 bar upwards, won't be met for very long. Not just the cheapo clones but even the more expensive Karchers (forget...

    Diesel vs petrol pricing

In '76 I filled my Landie for £5.00. Today it's £50. The old bitch hasn't lost its thirst, in fact it's probably a bit the worse for wear - avg 16 mpg in these 'ere 'ills! (but I can't bear to sell her) Ike

    Router Table Digital Readout

Not necessary. Trying to emulate machine tool accuracy is pointless. I don't have an Incra (whatever it does that a simple fence doesn't do) either, and I can still get top notch results from my table with nothing more than a precision engineers rule and 6" square for setting up. I've...

    Lifes work.

(the 'facts' according to Alan Ross) It's easy to judge others without ever meeting them or anyone in their 'circle'. I wouldn't presume or expect anyone should care what my opinion was of the Royals. Charles, Anne and the Gloucesters all live within 5 miles. I have met and spoken to...

    modern crappy tat

quote]don't even get me started about cars......... why have a computer control the rear wiper or even the tow bar lights. My newest car is a 1990 205 diesel, old school technology, bulletproof engine and cheap as chips (the spud variety that is) to maintain. It looks like an old shed with...

    Mortiser Bit

I'd recommend the Japanese bits from Axminster. They cut very well unlike the cheap Chinese (sets). They are about as useful as a chocolate teapot. cheers, Ike

Be honest - can I do it?

Hi Ian, You can practise many times getting a good joint without wasting much worktop, as you only need to skim a mm or two each time. cheers, ike

Chemical paint stripper-good at stripping back an old piano?

Hi Mark, I've stripped a fair bit of varnished stuff with Nitromors, after giving up with sanding. To make it even easier, after scraping the bulk of the goo off, work over the surface again with coarse wire wool dipped in Nitromors, and an old toothbrush for the mouldings and fiddly bits...

    Air Con

They are easy to fit - no special tools required except a 65mm core drill. Difficult to ascertain the actual operating efficiency as the specs are quite vague. I believe it varies according to the outside temperature. For example a unit with a 1.8kW power input can produce up to a 3.5kW heat...

    Tool Price Inflation

Well there's the costs and there's the price of stuff. Connected only by some fuzzy logic called 'value'. They charge as much as they can get away with. It's called business. If we as buyers don't like it, we must look elsewhere. Ike

    My Workshop/Garage Build

That is what you need to ask the council. In my experience, you get more help face to face with someone in the office. They usually have a simplified planning guide booklet which covers common FAQ's in this area. What I wouldn't recommend is to fire on without being absolutely sure of...

    Anglepoise Magnifier Light?

Hello Ken, There was another recent thread on lamps. Have a look at the Daylight Company products. I can vouch for the quality as I have one of these. Not cheap I know, but I use this mostly on the woodbench and 18W gives a very useful level of illumination. I like the separate magnifier...

    My Workshop/Garage Build

Unless the building is entirely of non-combustible material, including the roof structure, I think you musn't build closer than 1metre from the boundary. That would be to the extent of the eave/gutterline, not the wall cladding. I'm sure this is a common requirement across most local authority...
