Air Con

Has anyone fit split air con like the type you can get relatively cheap on ebay,advertised as pre gassed DIY fit??

Not myself but, I have worked on a project where there was a Fujisu system being fitted. It was pregassed but you still have to vacuum test and dry the system before firing it up so there is obviously a bit of specialist kit there. Some of the systems will draw the gas back into the outside unit for maintenance. The nuts and bolts of he system seemed straight forwards but you do need to be able to braze.

Thanks for the reply so it isnt as straightforward as they make it sound.They dont mention vacuum testing.This is the type im interested in.

I suppose if you are doing a back to back system where the inside unit is directly on the other side of the all to the outside unit you'll get away with it. However I am told that it is moisture that kills these systems. Looks cheap though doesn't it, probably worth a gamble at that price especially when they are so cheap to run in heating mode. Let me know how you get on.

I too would be interested to know how you get on if you buy one. I had thought about it for my workshop but don't know enough about Air con.

They are easy to fit - no special tools required except a 65mm core drill.
Difficult to ascertain the actual operating efficiency as the specs are quite vague. I believe it varies according to the outside temperature. For example a unit with a 1.8kW power input can produce up to a 3.5kW heat output in heating mode. (a Hitachi model). So they are up to twice as efficient as an ordinary resistive heater. I was too thinking about fitting one in the workshop.

I bought a self-install splt aircon from B&Q about 3 years ago. The install was easy with just one big hole through the wall and it's been great ever since. In spite of the instructions that say you can only fit them one-time, I moved my one with me when I moved house 2 years ago and installed it in my new office. It's never had any kind of problem in spite of the move.

And did you not have to vacuum test it or anything like that??
I sent the ebay seller a mail and he assures me you dont need to use any specialist equipment or need to vacuum test it.
But on other sites ive read about them,you have to remove all the moist air in the pipes etc.. otherwise it forms corrosive acid conditions in the pipes,pump etc..

There's no testing or special tools needed on these cheap split units. Open the valves and that's it. They may well incorporate some type of dessicant to absorb residual moisture.
