    common oak vessels-wip

I like that chainsaw safety t-shirt :D Not that I'm criticising you - that's often what I wear, and always feel aware of that I'm doing so.

    Competition

I was thinking last night about the photos that people have to submit. It would be useful to specify a minimum of ... a profile, from a higher angle showing the rim and inside, 1 of the base (either straight down of at an angle) in addition you might want to submit more if you have particular...

    Competition

More thoughts on using just a couple of judges - 1) it excludes them from the competition, 2) the judges will have to come to some sort of agreement on winners and such discussions may be difficult over the net and where you don't have a chance to inspect pieces closely

    Responding to Wizer's reminder!

That looks great. I've been meaning to try router effects on turned items for a while now - with the work still mounted and also with it removed. Maybe I'll get round to it one of these days... Duncan

    Competition entrants

I'm in, but please don't ask for WIP photos as I hate taking them - it breaks up my turning process too much. Duncan

    Competition

I'm not really sure how to go about organising categories. Number of years/months turning doesn't cover it as you may only turn one item per month. Number of items turned may not cover it, as you may have turned hundreds of key rings but never tackled anything larger than a goblet. A...

    Transport offered

The juggling community has something called juggler mail that is effective and relies on the fact that jugglers get together regularly for conventions around the country (and world, in fact) throughout the year. If an item isn't urgent then it's taken to a convention and passed on to someone...

    Negative Rake Scrapers

One advantage of using the Veritas burnisher (after a diamond hone in my case) is that the tool will last longer than if you grind it every time (even allowing for the fact that you're only at the grinder for a few seconds). I actually find it faster to use than the grinder as well Duncan

    Negative Rake Scrapers

If it's HSS don't quench it - it can tolerate the heat and quenching may put stresses and micro fractures into it. If it's carbon steel then just don't press it onto the grinder so much that it needs quenching. If you have an angle grinder then I'd be tempted to remove the round part with a...

    1st commission

Pete - the mortar appears to be made from spalted beech. I assume that the spalting hasn't caused soft spots. I'd also be concerned about the vegetable oil finish as I believe it goes rancid. Duncan

'Greenies' .. The "Prius Polluter" truths

Before I write anything else I should state that I own a Prius. Now that's out in the open... Back to the original post from Jenx, and not getting involved in the global warming debate... It has a standard engine and an electric motor, but that's not hugely relevant. Not necessarily true - it...

    walnut bowl

What a stunning bowl. Nice, simple design which shows off the timber beautifully. Duncan

New log pile -how to prep them

I agree - a chainsaw is incredibly useful when dealing with logs, and will save a fair bit of time and effort. Before I got mine I was limited to what would fit under the bandsaw and what I could cut up with a bow saw. Just a thought, but is it even possible to hire a saw without producing...

New log pile -how to prep them

But with that chainsaw you should also buy safety gear, which will probably cost more than the actual saw Duncan

    Using Speaker Magnets....

I've never used the magnets from speakers, but if you can get hold of any old hard drives they have some fantastically strong magnets in them - very useful for holding things to the lathe. Just don't trap your fingers between them! You can also use the drive platters as super shiny drinks...

    Tool Steel

I made my 3 point tool from HSS which I bought from the Ashley Isles stand at the Harrogate show. I also bought some square bars and have made bead forming tools. Unfortunately I can't remember how much the bars were. There's probably somewhere you can buy it online but I've never tried. Duncan

For sale: router rebate cutter: SOLD

I hope this is ok mods (I usually keep to the turning forum)... I have one of the following CMT rebate cutter sets that has been used less than 5 times. It's been gathering dust for at least 5 years so I might as well sell it. Everything is there but the box is slightly damaged. It will cut...

    Ready to jack it in.

As others have said - don't give up. Just introduce yourself back into it slowly with a few practice sessions. As for the cold workshop - make sure it's insulated. Mine has 5cm rockwool on all walls, the door, the ceiling and under the floor. Then there's a layer of chipboard/plywood over that...

    How to get them out?

Pete - would you really use a faceplate for something of only 3" (let alone 2")? I couldn't really say what the maximum I've turned with drives is, but it's well over that. And I often do my first mounting of a bowl with drive centres. Obviously, as with most things turning related, it comes...
