I just watched one of John Berkely's DVD's and was impressed by the 3 point tool. So I thought I might have a go at making one myself. Mainly to save money. I'd also like to try one of those gouges without a flute.

Anyway I'm trying to find a cheap steel supplier. I'm not sure what the best type of steel is to use. I've found this:

http://www.metals4u.co.uk/detail.asp?Ca ... rd_ID=2358

Which is 'mild steel'. Does that mean I'd need to temper it? Should I go for HSS or would Carbide?

Ashley Isles sell tool steel but not in their website, so I'm trying to get an idea of price.

Help most appreciated.

Mild Steel is of no use other than for a 'one-off' job. it can only be hardened by Case hardening and then the hardness is only skin deep.

Your best bet is "Silver Steel"
Shape, heat to cherry red, quench in oil or water.
Polish, heat back towards edge until straw coloured and quench.

Same process as seen here.

brilliant Chas, thanks. Looks like some good deals on eBay. Worth a go.

I made my 3 point tool from HSS which I bought from the Ashley Isles stand at the Harrogate show.
I also bought some square bars and have made bead forming tools.
Unfortunately I can't remember how much the bars were.

There's probably somewhere you can buy it online but I've never tried.

Hi Tom,

I bought a bit of 3/8 HSS bar from Ashley Isles at a show a while ago and I think (IIRC) it was about £10. For a point tool you'll only need 1/4" bar so it'll be less. Not really worth the hassle of the blacksmithery (unless you/ve got the kit anyway)

Cheers,

Richard

Cheers chaps. I actually went with Chas's link last night and ordered a couple of lengths.

Hog: thanks for reminding me of that article. I knew I'd seen on before!

Will have a go next weekend.
