    Should I???.......

Mark I'd go for the Axminster K10 as it has more option re the thread size should you upgrade you lathe in the future and secondly the range of jaws available is vast. It would also give you the option to upgrade the chuck body to a Super Precision if you want a more professional chuck in the...

    WANTED: YEW

Thank you everyone for the information. It's much appreciated. Mike thanks for that site link - it's fascinating. Regarding the toxicity I know the foliage is poisonous to animals and the berries to humans but to date I haven't lost a customer to the timber - touch wood

    WANTED: YEW

I'm after some Yew from which I can turn a salad bowl for a good customer of mine. He is after a bowl about 18/20 inches in diameter, reasonably deep (6/8 inches) and preferrably in Burr Yew. I know it's a big request but would be grateful for any help. Thanks

Which turning tools to go for?

I'm with the others here and always advise against buying sets of tools. If you are new to turning (sorry I haven't been around for a while) I'd just go for HSS M2 for now. Any of the 5 manufactuers, Ashley Isles, Crown, Hamlet, Henry Taylor & Sorby offer a good selection. I must admit I have a...

    Gouge terminology!

Tam I always understood the UK method of sizing a gouge was from the inside of the flute to the outside of the bar whereas the US method is the bar diameter :?: So as you say a UK 3/8" gouge is a US 1/2"

    Which Chuck should I get

What you need to consider is what you will be using the chuck for; what jaws are available for the chuck to suit that need and as Graham mentioned how easy is it to or what are the options available to change the back plate/insert if you upgrade/change your lathe. On this last point I think you...

    Woodturning Day

Classic Hand Tools are having a woodturning day on Sunday 28th October - details on their web site. If anyone is interested in having a go with the Munro hollowing tools I'll be there demonstrating them. I used this hands on advice approach at Westonbirt and found it went down very well. All...

Paul It's looking good =D> . Glad to be of some help

    Home made controlbox arm.

Paul Why not attach a wooden bracket direct to the TV arm with curved slots in the uprights of the bracket. Then attach the wooden box holding the control box with bolts and wing nuts through the slotted channels of the bracket. In this way you can angle the control box. Hope that makes sense...

    At long last..........Critique welcome-No3

Paul I would just echo Dick's comments - the base looks a little large/heavy for the lightness you've created in the bowl section.

Paul A good solution to the problem. Well done and glad to see the lathe is up and running.

    using oils

You're better off using an oil which has drying agents in it - I'm not sure teak oil does? I've been using Rustins Danish Oil for about 18 years now and haven't found anything to beat it. But there are many other products available which are just as good. It's all down to personal preference...

    a few simple questions

Yes that the definition most often used. Though Andrew is also right as a few lathe manufacturers also use 'swing' to mean the maximum diameter the lathe can turn over the bed. All very confusing

Hi Shedhead They are actually two totally separate companies. The US one is run by Dale Nish and the UK one by Nick Davidson.

Our big tree, storm damaged, help.

Noel It might be advisable to get someone in to check the safety of the tree. From the picture it looks as though there is quite a bit of rot where the branch broke away. Rot tends to travel down within the trunk so you can't always know have safe the tree is. In the past I've declined to take...
