Yes finally got round to some proper turning today on me new lathe, with a new chuck too :D ,which i have been waiting for  and after sorting the workshop out.
Got to say that the lathe is excellent :D and would recommend it.
Seems to be a lot smoother, and more solid.
Tail stock, and tool rest glides and locks easily. The motor is really, really quiet, and my control box arm extension seems to work,so will be making a better one of those soon. :D
Can't wait to get back down their now.

Anyway, todays piece is a piece of Chestnut.
200mm dia x 80mm deep.Finished with sanding sealer and woodwax.
Critique welcome.

I tried taking the piccys in different ways, all on a tripod-flash-diffused flash-and no flash,to try and show the true colour of the wood, and would say that the middle one is the closest.Which was no flash.

Full flash.But from a distance.

Nice piece,Paul - take it that it's sweet chestnut, rather than horse chestnut ?
Unusual shape (not that there's anything wrong with that) but looks balanced in terms of base, rim and height proportions.Nice flowing curves (not that there's anything wrong with that,either.. )
Like the grain pattern and the finish - also looks a useable piece :D

Hey Paul, something distinctly different to christen the new spinney machine there.

Rim edge thickness certainly gives the feeling of lightness to the subject, I don't know enough about proportions to pass meaningful comments and by how much it might break the rules of thirds and the like in any direction but I think the overall shape works.
The figuring is good but not too dominant and seems to me to be sympathetic to the shape.

Yes, I like the lightness of that one, and the finish. The only thing about the shape that bothered me was a feeling that the base was a bit too heavy compared to the lightness of the overall effect? Either a slightly smaller foot diameter, or possibly a shorter "stem". i.e. make the narrowest bit slightly lower?

Paul

I would just echo Dick's comments - the base looks a little large/heavy for the lightness you've created in the bowl section.

Thanks for the comments everyone :D

No Andrew,i am reliably informed from the tree surgeon that it is,or was a big Conker tree/Horse chestnut.
I had all the trunk section he had when i saw the colours in it,and this is the result.Very nice i think.

Paul,

Very nice indeed - brave of you to go that thin on the rim - well done.

I like the shape - only real suggestion is that the "neck" could have been slightly narrower.

Figure and finish are excellent - I would be happy to have that sitting on display at my house. 8)
