Hello all - pain in the butt here again!
From previous posts, you'll know I'm not the sharpest gouge on the rack when it comes to turning, so I would like your expert wisdom and knowledge as to whether I should buy this for my ultra expensive, professional Perform CCSL lathe! :wink:

I have the same chuck from them and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
It's a solid assembly.

But...

You seem to want it at a bad time. It's just come off offer from £69 and it is regularly in the sale at this price so unless you want it urgently it may be worth hanging on and saving £30.

Cannot go wrong at the sale price

Rethink time methinks! Been doing a bit of browsing - so, for my lathe, Perform CCSL which chuck would you advise from:

Axminster Clubman K10 or K8

Supernova 2

Dakota XT700

If I buy any one of them, will they be ready to use from the box or will accessories be needed?

I'd go for the Axminster K10 as it has more option re the thread size should you upgrade you lathe in the future and secondly the range of jaws available is vast. It would also give you the option to upgrade the chuck body to a Super Precision if you want a more professional chuck in the future and you already have a range of the Axminster jaws for the K10.

It does come ready to use but only with the C type dovetail jaws

As you will see in the thread re 'Sorby Patriot Chuck', the Supanova is now Chaiwanese and the Sorby (British made) is identical. Whatever chuck you get you need to make sure that it will be compatible with your next lathe as Mark says.

I am on the wrong side of the pond for what is available, but from what I have seen, any of the top chucks are solid, well made and versatile. Most come with one set of jaws and a wood screw but will happily take your money for as many extra sets as you wish to get. Look for one with a replaceable thread insert so it can move with you if you change lathes in the future. I would ignore the question of Tommy bars versus special wrench for tightening the chuck. I have a OneWay standard chuck and have used it for seven or eight years. On no occasion have I needed more than two hands to mount the work and use the chuck. Any awkwardness was solely from my part and would have been duplicated on the specialty wrench version. For production work, give me the Tommy bars.

Oh well - so much for research and advice just been here and bought the Robert Sorby Patriot chuck and a heap of blanks!
