    3 phase again

3 phase can be pricey to install. It depends how far the electric company have to take the cable. I had a 10K quote to supply electric to some barns I was thinking or renting but that involved installing 5 poles. Wadkin machinery is very good quality and far superoir in build and performance...

    Slot mortising bits

I have only ever seen metric bits for slot mortisers. You could try here http://www.machines4wood.com/mall/depar ... /81221/1/1 and see if they can get some for you or alternatively just use the metric cutters 13mm is basically 1/2 inch etc and cut your tenons to suit. Jon

    Metabo router (OF E 1229)

Hi and welcome. Havent used a metabo router but I have some of there other tools which are good so I would expect the router to be OK. For a handheld router I generally use a Dewalt 621K or a Festool OF1010. Both can be used in a table but are a bit underpowered for a heavy cut and only have...

    architect fees

Whilst we are grumbling about architects all the ones near me seem unable to grasp the ammount of space needed to fit a staircase in. 3 out of my last 5 staircase jobs have required a lot of messing about and rejigging because of the architects plans have been wrong. On the subject of Charles I...

Mixing MR MDF and Standard MDF paint difference?

I have never found the need to prime the edges with anything other than primer. If you sand well up to 240grit a few extra coats of primer is all you should need with the edges sanded well between coats. Jon

    CNC - arguements please

I think CNC is capable of being extremely accuarate. The problems I see for a bespoke cabinet maker is justifying the cost. Its probably easier and much cheaper to sub out the work to a specialist rather than investing many thousands in a machine. A CNC machine really needs to be working most of...

    Chest of Drawers

Hi Olly I would put a drawer rail front and back which is tennoned into the corner posts Between this will be 2 front to back rails which will take the runner. The runner could be housed in or just screwed on. The central post can either be screwed to the drawer rails or preferably the drawer...

    Any Metalworkers out there

Hi John they are imperial yank spec. I dont know whether you could mount a bush in the adapter put this in the chuck and turn it or whether the lock nut would work loose. Jon

    Any Metalworkers out there

Hi John I didnt think of Roger. My initial thoughts was that the easiest option would be to turn down that guide bush adapter. I have about 8 different bushes for it so it would be pretty versatile. Jon

    Any Metalworkers out there

Hi Chas I was thinking of a metal or plastic one rather than hardwood but I dont see why it cant be hardwood? I will take some accurate measurements tommorow and PM you. Thanks Jon

    Chest of Drawers

For drawer bottoms I usually use 6mm veneered one sided ply as it is cheaper than veneered MDF and just as strong. If you want to add a central muntin you could make this out of hardwood and have a hardwood central runner rather than the 2 side runners you have at the moment. This method gives...

    Any Metalworkers out there

Basically I want a raised pin guide bush in the centre of the hole in the table. A jig which will be attached to the workpiece will have a hole in it that will drop on top of the guidebush and allow a hole to be drilled in exactly the same place on every component. It is pretty much the same...

router station and down draft sanding table combined

My initial thoughts are pulling fine sanding dust past the router may not be too good for the router. Found this that might be useful http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=OdZT ... 5#PPA62,M1 Jon

    Any Metalworkers out there

Hi I am wondering if anyone with some metalworking skills/gear would be intersted in a small project. I am after a bush to fit my pillar drill to facilitate the use of jigs for accurate drilling. The drill is a Wadkin LM There is a machined hole with a lip where the bush needs to go. The...

Looking to buy a bench-top pillar drill

I have had a couple of cheap bench mounted pillar drills the last one was a draper and i experienced the problems that have already been stated. I decided to go secondhand and managed to bag myself a wadkin drill for £60 of ebay. It has 150mm of travel a foot pedal to control the drill so you...

    Edging and edgebanders

Hi Richard I had a look at these portable glue pot edgebanders at the W8 exhibition at the NEC last year. There were various companies selling the machines and as far as I can tell they are all the same machine but just rebadged. The were branded as Felder, Adamik and Wegoma. I was offered a...

how much tear out is acceptable

The way to avoid this is to use a thicknessing drum or wide belt sander which will get a tear out free finish on wild and interlocked grain. http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Jet- ... -32808.htm Jon

Is there anything I should know about working with Cherry or

Walnut is one of the nicest woods to use and glues and machines really well you shouldnt need any additional protective clothing. You need to watch out for sapwood in both species as it can be in most boards. Cherry is also quite suspectable to colour changing if a item is left in the same...
