    Scroll sawing should be relaxing

You are certainly not, I have been fretworking for over 50 years and it still 'shocks' me when a blade snaps or comes out of it's holder, it's not just motor powered fretsaws either I used to jump just the same with my treadle machine and even using a hand-frame it is alarming when a blade brakes.

    Scroll sawing should be relaxing

Typical, since I posted my comment above pointing out that it's rare for the blade to come out of the bottom clamp it's been happening to me today several times whilst doing a lot of internal cuts and as you describe not only is it damn annoying it also makes one jump! BTW ignore my comment in...

    New EEC rules re Vacs!!

Fully agree the 652 (Senior) was (and still is) an excellent cleaner along with the model 912 were almost universally used in hotels, pubs, hospitals and many other places during the 1960's 70's and 80's. The advantage was that every single part was available as a spare inc all the individual...

    Scroll sawing should be relaxing

I don't have the AWFS 18 but it looks to be a copy of the Hegner and the blade clamps look identical to me, does your blade clamp have the little grub screw on the clamp opposite the main clamping bolt? If so have you tried adjusting this? I have the Hegner and it's very rare indeed for the...

    Isn't it cute?

I hate to be the one to disillusion you but you will find scroll-sawing a frustrating experience with that saw and it may well put you off what can be a pleasant hobby. (sorry if my comment sounds negative but it is better to be honest) :)

    What is it?

Good to know, I found one in a box of bits and pieces in a garage clear out, I saved it in my odds draw thinking it was some sort of tack hammer!

    Wickes... Toolstation?

Indeed Toolstation prices are in most cases a lot lower than Wickes prices so it seems odd that in a Wickes store with a Toolstation 'in house' Wickes customers will have a choice on a lower price if they take the time to check. I imagine that Wickes are putting TS in store where they don't have...

    Wickes... Toolstation?

Mark Goddard-Watts started both Screwfix and Toolstation, Travis Perkins boght a 30% stake of TS in 2008 and bought the rest in 2012. I wonder if he will now start up another company? I reckon that if I had made the reported £60million that Kingfisher paid him for Screwfix in 2000 I would retire...

    Being ripped off

Have to be honest I am confused too! If you go to a craft fair to sell your goods does it matter if 100 different people make purchases and you are all sold out or 10 people or just one person buys the lot? Or would you stop selling when 50% of the stock had gone? I could understand you not...

    New EEC rules re Vacs!!

Indeed a lot of people just check the plug (if openable) and if the wires are connected assume the motor is faulty whereas the conductors are often open circuit inside the insulation. On moulded on plugs it easy to snip it off and replace, amazingly there are a lot of people (obviously not...

    New EEC rules re Vacs!!

As Phil says the rule applies to domestic machines and I am one of the few people who agrees with the new rule, the high wattages have got out of hand in the last few years with domestic vacs being advertised with up to 2500 watts motors! You do not need a high wattage cleaner to clean...

A nice gesture Naxie. well done. :)

Suggestions as to a range of blades for a beginner.

Have to agree with Chris especially the bit about spiral blades. These are essentially standard blades that have been twisted so that they cut in all directions, they can be useful but are very difficult to cut nice flowing curves or straight lines without bumps etc! I would recommend you leave...

    Decent chisels for 50pence!

Sorry I didn't want to say to much about the company, I was dubious of even mentioning it TBH as we recently got told of in the Scrollsaw forum about promoting items. I only posted as I though others might have been near a store and benefited from some dirt cheap items, with hindsight I probably...

    Decent chisels for 50pence!

A while ago I was reading the thread here about the cheapo Poundland chisel and thought it would be useful to have a couple for paint scraping etc, however this morning I happened to be in a B&M store and thought I would see if they had any cheap ones To my surprise I found several sizes reduced...

    Dust/Chip Extractor at Rutlands.

Nowt wrong with that Most of the machines in my workshop are equipped with an old vac rigged up to come on automatically when I set the machine running I usually make a cabinet stand for the machine then in the cupboard underneath I install a vac, I sometimes make my own wooden vac by stripping...

    Dust/Chip Extractor at Rutlands.

If it does the job and Chris says it does the motor HP or wattage rating is irrelevant IMHO, The problem is that these days too much emphasis is place on wattage power of motors, for example we have some makes of domestic vacuum cleaners being advertised as over 2000watts rating which is the...

    Replacement carbon brushes ?

From what you have written I would suggest that your problem was caused by a sticking carbon brush, that is one of the carbons sticking in it's holder, generally carbon brushes on Vac type motors will outlast the machine, they wear down very slowly, if a brush is a little tight or stuck in it's...
