Having a go at a Boyer

Ah yes, but Ian, office photocopiers go through a rigorous R and D process to ensure that they; a) Break down seven pages into a long and time sensitive document, b) If watched, wait until you have satisfied yourself that they are printing and then stop 12 seconds after you leave. This is...

    Timber prices per cube

Cheers for that, I'm not clued-up enough (yet) to know what is a good deal or not on eBay, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for buildings being stripped. Thanks for the detailed reply.

    Timber prices per cube

Jelly, how does one acquire hardwood job-lots opportunistically? I ask, as I want to get some beech (or similar) to make a benchtop and I'm looking to keep the costs as low as possible (obviously). I'm in no particular rush, so any tips would be gratefully received.

    Slippery-sloping

Jimi - will do. Richard - here are the pictures; You can see the large pit in the middle on this one (and that's after about two hours work with sandpaper and then a wet grinder).

    Slippery-sloping

Richard - I'll sort a photo out later this evening, but basically, there are a couple of pits near the edge that don't seem to be coming out, I presume because they are too deep. Jimi - thanks very much for looking mate. I've bought the Greaves one you suggested. Many thanks all.

    Slippery-sloping

Ok, so I've spent a couple of hours sorting out the back of the iron and got it mostly pit-free and then re-sharpened the bevel. It now makes pretty good shavings, but there were a couple of pits which were too deep to get out (and by God, I tried!) and so it is still marking the wood. I don't...

    Kity

    I've got a Kity 413 bandsaw and it's top-drawer.

Any help with a new band saw

I had the 400n for six months and it was a pain to be honest and ended up going back. Can't fault Axi for their service, but the saw had five or six things wrong with it straight from the factory and ended up being taken back to the workshop for a mod (which worked). Something else then went...

    Slippery-sloping

Ok Pedder, thanks for the information. I will have a play and see what I can do or see if there is someone round here who could do it. Cheers, Noggsy

    Slippery-sloping

Pedder, is that likely to be economic to do? I was thinking of trying to get the teeth reground from scratch - is that going to be a waste of money do you think? If I sent it to you, how much would it cost to regrinding d and is that something you would be prepared to do? Andy, Jimi cheers for...

    Slippery-sloping

Ok, so I've bought the saw...how do I make it look like yours Jimi? That looks lethal... Looks like yours I think Jimi And here's a close up of the teeth Here's the little plane as asked Here's the big plane iron after sharpening and use... ...to make these

    Slippery-sloping

Phil - I know, I know. I got talking to the guy in the shop (a turner) and then realised my poor wife was sat in the car waiting (I only 'nipped' in). I forgot, but I think I'll go back. Andy - thanks for that, doesn't sound that easy, but I'll give it a go. I'm pretty sure everything was...

    Slippery-sloping

Thanks guys and particularly Jimi for that generous offer. I'll post details when I get back on Sunday. As an aside, I'm on Arran at the moment (stunning place) and I saw an old R Sorby dovetail/tenon saw for £6 in a shop. I know Sorby are a good make and the brass-back looked in good nick and...

    Slippery-sloping

Thanks for the advice. I've sharpened the iron, which went well, but I noticed a small nick in the cutting edge and couldn't work out why. I then resharpened it and when I used it, loads more nicks appeared. I presume this means the iron is knackered? I've got some photos, but I'm away on...

    Slippery-sloping

Cheers Jimi, shame you're not nearer mate :) I know you love your corro-dip, but in the absence of that, what's the best way for me to clean up the ironwork? I'm fairly happy with sharpening (I've got a Tormek) but not the de-rusting. Also, if the sole does need flattening, will a shorter...

    Advice/Input Wanted

It's a really good question and one which I can only answer anecdotally (not being employed in wood at all). I've been doing a job I absolutely love for 10 years and that is worth a huge amount to me - my wife has worked for a few years doing something she does not like, and the stress it has...

    Slippery-sloping

Right, you buggers have lured me into your strange cult ;) I've been reading this forum for a few months and I went from none to one plane quite easily and quickly. Then, the other day, whilst buying some proper kit (for turning), I ended up buying a couple of number 5s and another number 4...
