Well Hit Me With A Mallet

Is that the acrylic impregnated mallet? Ooooh, I'm jealous. It's on my short list of things I want to get. Well, to be more accurate, its very high up on my very long short-list. If that makes sense... Is it as good a tool as I've heard? By all accounts it's unsurpassed... I must say I admire...

    Mystery Tool?

Absolutely no idea but it doesn't look like something off the shelf. Hard to see a company making something like this in any great number with so much brass. Thats not to say its not quality.

    Side Rebate Planes

Sound Alf. The power of simple logic. It would have been a reasonable approach. I have some rebates to get smooth so I'll try this approach there. Andy, again on reflection, that would have been a very reasonable approach. I had ruled this out without consideration early on and it was...

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

Oh Rob. Hmmm, for the back I first considered a MDF/Ply with felt glued on. This then went to a leather hide finish that might be used on a writing desk. While thinking about these options I was also thinking about vertical lapped boards. Now you've got me really thinking. My rebate is...

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

I started to fit the shelves. I got myself a Veritas side rebate plane to help fine tune the dado's and I kept my router work tight to allow this plane make the fine adjustment. However I was struck with a problem then as I hadn't accounted for the fact that the dado's were stopped. I've asked...

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

Ok everyone, happy new year to you all. I'm taken this project a little further over the holidays. I've missed a few steps with the camera which happens when one is engrossed in their work. Above I have glued up the dovetail joints and used a router to make stopped dado's for the shelves and...

    Side Rebate Planes

I'm a little puzzled about the use of the side rebate plane. I got the Veritas version to adjust dado's for shelves on a little project I'm doing. Stopped dado's mind. My question is, if I take off the front of the plane to make it into a 'Bullnose' type as described on Dereks review, how do I...

The problem and my solution ( I hope )

To seal the bottom of the door you could use a length of insulation used to wrap around plumbing pipes. It has a good deal of compression which would form the shape of the ground with the weight of the door. Just a thought Eoin

    Elaborated tool

I also agree with ALF. One needs to know where to stop. For me the mitre plane with the damascus steel is Andersons best piece of work as the patination (if thats the right word) looks positively luscious. And still one might argue that it is too fussy. Other planes of his are ruined with...

    Circular clamp

I often wondered if biscuits would be particularly useful in this situation to keep them aligned.

    A bench too far ???

I'm inclined to agree with jaffajim0. I've just read this for the first time all the way through and I have to say the vibes were not good. This may not have been intentional but people have cut very close to the bone of someone who is a designer by stating that his piece is not original...

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

Most certainly. I had a twenty something TPI Pax dovetail saw before that and the Lie nielsen was a revelation. I suspect it may have something to do with the way it was masterfully sharpened before I got it ... However, I must now learn to sharpen it myself... Alf, I think a few...

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

:D Thanks lads. Ha ha, I have been good to myself with my tools but let he/she who has not sinned cast the first stone... I wonder how far down this slope I have gotten? Eoin

    Copy of the Record 311

Ah, of course Gazpal. I see now. So the bullnose lets you into corners with just enough sole in front of the blade to prevent it diving into the wood. It all makes sense now...

    Copy of the Record 311

I find the concept of a combination plane like this rather interesting and to help avoid the 'slope' I'm trying to question its validity. So, what advantage has a bull nose over a chisel plane that the standard plane will not do? Regards Eoin

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

A bit of further chopping out of the dovetails. I've broken the blade on my piercing saw and I'm going to need it badly. I think I may have made my pins are far too small... ECHO ECHO echo...

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

Ok, I've found a number of fittings which I'd like to try for the glass flap door to the cabinet. I'm not sure about the first two, as follows, but I must consider the cost... But this one is my favouite... Will they work with glass? They are all Hafele products. I have no experience with...

    Wouldn't it be loverly

Finewoodworking had a photo montage of the same workshop showing its construction. The joists were fixed to the rafters. Its a nice workshop but it looks very full. I wouldn't fancy making kitchen cabinets in there. How're you doing these times Devonwoody? Am I right in saying your shop is...

    Stanley 5 1/2 refurb....

Excellent. Beautiful looking plane. I must say I love the look of the matt paint. I seems to offset the fabulous finish on the exposed steel parts. Have you shown your process anywhere on this forum? If not you might consider showing us how its done when you do your next plane. Pretty...
