    Skelton dovetail saw pass round.

Arrived with me this morning - looks just as good as the last time we met (when Jimi43 had it). A thought struck me, this saw is somewhat blessed - it's been through quite a few hands and not got lost (unlike a Riley awl, a Liogier rasp...). I shall report back asap, though I feel I'll only be...

    When does ripping become re-sawing?

Not seen the fork test before and I tend to be measly with stock so 300mm off a good board end might hurt me a bit, but it's a good test. I've had many a dramatic surprise deep ripping boards on the b/s - the most common drama for me is the case-hardened effect with a big bow opening where the...

Used Pillar Drill - Startrite v Fobco v Meddings

Excellent Porker, thanks. There are various numbers etc on the chuck so that should do it. I read somewhere that the lower of the 2 collars just above chuck is used to remove the chuck. I guess turn to lower collar and use a drift/wedge to tap the chuck off... just a guess at this stage as this...

Used Pillar Drill - Startrite v Fobco v Meddings

Found this recent thread, very handy - have just got a Mercury fairly locally. Very happy with it so far. Has a Jacobs keyed chuck on it, and I've read about a custom Jacobs taper (?) It looks on the manual (online ALT Saws have one) that the chuck will be female taper - I would like to fit a...

    Material for Jigs?

Totally agree, mdf is excellent for most uses - of course we all know it isn't stiff but it's easily braced. It's cheap, fast to work precisely, clean edges etc. Benefits from a quick seal - acrylic is very good for locking the fibres down (edges) and dries in minutes. Obviously ply is stiffer...

    Sharpening Forstner bits

excellent response all, many thanks. Been out there this morning and tried a few - much better cutting. I used needle files but also small diamond files. I suppose I come from the hand-tool p.o.v. and am used to requiring very fine edges (chisel say) so filing just felt a bit rough. But I...

    Sharpening Forstner bits

Any tips on a fine sharpenijng medium that will get into the spaces? I have small slip stones but they aren't really fine and even with those access is an issue. I'm considering an offcut of Corian as it is very good at polishing blade edges  I have some Freud bits that could do with...

    Material for Jigs?

I believe mdf contains small amounts of formaldehyde, which is currently classified as 'suspected of causing cancer'. Hasn't formaldehyde also been blamed for causing gender inversion in some river fish? (just recall reading it somewhere).

The wife just bought me this..........I'll tell her later.

Jimi43 will be along no doubt, he just got one too. Seen pics of it cutting ali scetion for some cnc beast and it looks brilliant. Unbelievable for the money - if I had any excuse for a compact mitre saw I'd be down B&Q sharpish.

Roubo bench video. A bench to make your mouth water.

Those build plans are interesting, copyright Guido Henn - but the actual copy refers to the 'chop' and the 'vise'. Nice to have those plans for free but it's the Benchcrafted 'Roubo' for sure (here's a shot of the Benchcrafted one) Brian Anderson ('translator') is a mate of Chris Schwarz (Lost...

Roubo bench video. A bench to make your mouth water.

v nice bench and it ticks almost all my personal boxes: flush front legs, stretcher for example. I'd need dog holes in right leg for longer panels. But it's basically a Benchcrafted promo video, it's their 'Roubo' plan with their kit of hardware. Easy, just get the debit card out!

    Material for Jigs?

Personally I'd say mdf is generally better than any ply variant, more homogeneous and easier to machine details in if necessary (slots, profiles etc etc). Other favourites are some plastics - UHDPE is widely used (ultra high density polyethylene) and is easy to get in part sheets; delron is...

recommend a finish for a whitewood bench please?

indeed Jumps, will pm. Can't comment on benches, just know what ~I like! And have a new all-hornbeam bench ready to start v soon, should be a bit of a brick, that one. The centre will be Myford I expect, drawers came with that. Just a point on logic - mid winter so you decide to build the bench...

    a wood thread thread

yes, BB, I'm vee pleased (haha) with results now. I was half-expecting to be picked up (maybe by your good self  ) on my use of 'tangent' which is misguided. The cutter actually aligns to a shallow cord of the circle, tangent is wrong and misleading. I've been using rxh's tap a bit...

recommend a finish for a whitewood bench please?

I'll look forward to seeing the pics Jumps! Over the years I've tried many different finishes on benchtops and I'm still undecided, but fast to apply and dry is high on my own list. I do rate Osmo very highly indeed - I just don't think there is a single best finish. One of many others I've used...

    amusing H&S notice

this is drifting into the H&S area of 'the corporate hand of care' - which assumes we are all stupid. I have a real issue with safety caps on stuff like finishes, oils etc (anything really). I have a Tsaw that removes body parts, but I need tools to get the cap off the Tru-Oil, or Danish, or...

Scheppach Planer & thicknesser hms 2600ci

I had one for a few years, got it ex demo from a show and paid about 950. The ci is important and far better than the earlier ali table versions. Mass just seems to settle the whole thing down. I found it very precise and reliable, full width thicknessing so long as you aren't greedy with depth...
