Yes very good.
I used to build computers, and once we bought some cases which we could not open. There were no visible screws anywhere. Eventually we worked out the front panel just pulled off on plastic clips to reveal the screws proper underneath. Inside the case we found a very helpful leaflet with instructions on how to open the case...

A bit like the old wage packet days where the sealed packet carried the instruction to 'Check contents before opening envelope' :?

In a previous company we had some software with a licence agreement that said by opening the package you agreed with the licensing terms and of course that info was inside the package. We'd obviously borrowed the licence agreement from somewhere else! I think I was the only one to check it. I must be odd.

I usually slip something into a licence agreement. If anybody comments, you know it's been read.
My favourite is just "So there." right at the end. Nobody's ever complained, not even my bosses past.

You do need to read that stuff though. I've been pestered by an outfit in the US supposedly helping sales lead generation. Their Ts & Cs basically give them complete control over any information communicated over their system, in perpetuity. They can use it, store it, pass it on to third parties, etc. Actually what they seem to do is spam people, as soon as they get hold of email addresses (users are encouraged to upload their contacts).

Despite various Congressional acts, the US still has weak control over spamming, etc. And it amazes me that people accept the Ts & Cs of Google, Facebook, et al.

Really Faustian, all of them.

I found these warnings on something I got in Toolstation the other day:

It's encouraging to know people care enough to go to the trouble.

Let me see... I'll need eye protection, ear defenders, a dust mask, and gloves. It does seem a bit over the top though...

this is drifting into the H&S area of 'the corporate hand of care' - which assumes we are all stupid. I have a real issue with safety caps on stuff like finishes, oils etc (anything really). I have a Tsaw that removes body parts, but I need tools to get the cap off the Tru-Oil, or Danish, or most other bottled and canned stuff. I think the idea is that if I can't get the cap off I can't drink it. But I'm smart and resourcful, so I can get the cap off

ok, not that smart, should be 'resourceful' of course

They have to assume this, as the majority do indeed appear to be stupid if you look at the daft things some people do.

We had a few inches of snow the other week.
Someone wearing 3" heels slipped in the car park and complained the car park had not totally salted when she arrived at 7am.
I asked what sort of ***** turns out in the snow in that footwear and oh by the way snow is known to be slippery!
Ended up in the hr directors office and asked to apologise
Told him were he could go as well

I am the company h&s manager
Roll on retirement!

I was and I have!

If that sounds a bit smug I'm sorry.

It was supposed to sound a lot smug :D :D :D

I got truly fed up with people demanding their right to be idiots and then blaming the organisation via the usual scum sucking bottom feeders (that's the legal profession!).

Now I can just cuts lumps off myself to my hearts content!

I once worked for an American CEO who basically refused to speak to women. When I probed him about why..... over several beers in a posh hotel in California....... he said he had been targeted by a known trouble maker (female worker) who had played the system to get him over a legal barrel for sexism. Basically she had falsely accused him of inappropriate behaviour and then sued his *** knowing he'd settle out of court. She then moved companies and repeated this behaviour over and over, netting several hundred thousand dollars with each scoop. US law prohibited previous case histories being brought to bear on any current litigation as relevant apparently!! In other words she could take the micky with impunity.

Because he had done nothing, happily married bloke with kids, he became paranoid around women workers for obvious reasons. So her behaviour really damaged the opportunities for other women because they sure as hell didn't get executive positions under that CEO.

We've got a good family friend who's just taken early retirement from the H+S, too. She's exactly the same - hates the silly nonsense - even though she used to get assigned to investigate the really serious incidents.

I wasn't trying to brag about my credentials just trying to make the point that properly qualified h&s folks do not dream up the daft stuff, that's done by amateurs. Usually employed by the council

Like Eric's friend I daily deal with life threatening stuff and the stupidity distracts from that.
