    Oak beam table

I really like the carved bowl - I'm going to be nicking that idea soon... Ed

Is the carving just freehand Matty? Ed

to biscuit or not to biscuit

Mostly I go without biscuits, because I find it easier to align the boards under partial clamp pressure with small mallet taps - if there are biscuits that for whatever reason are not **** on you loose that ability to adjust. I've done many joints this way and have yet to have one fail, or...

    Moisture Meter for building measurements

In regard to use on timber you can adjust for the specific gravity of the species giving far more accurate measurements. I also like the idea of pinless measurements as having had a cheapo pin meter it was not good. Ed

    Small home kiln design

I don't particularly subscribe to the view that kiln dried timber is crap, or that it loses its character when kiln dried. I do however, agree that properly air dried timber is probably always going to be better, the question is how often it is properly air dried... my concern would be that...

    Moisture Meter for building measurements

Protimeter is the one I come across most commonly in construction circles, but I've never used one. If I was buying I would go for Electrophysics; http://www.electrophysics.co.uk/products.htm Ed

    Japanese Shinwa Sliding Bevel

I have both the small and large Veritas ones and rate them. They are nicely made and the locking mechanism is positive and not in the way. Ed

Is this what they call 'the slope'?

Its a headache - every time you bend down to do something on the bench you're going to smack your head on the front of the planarium. Ed

    Axminster at Rycotewood

Nothing to do with holier than thou Nick. Also, I think all of the reasons you make fall into either my category (a) or (b). This is fine; if people want to do it then good for them. Ed

    The Alter- finished

Excellent progress Matt - I'd be weeks on that. I like the design too. Plenty of Domino use as well! Ed

    Extravagant...moi?

The handle is African Blackwood, the head is quilted maple that is somehow infused with acrylic to make it more or less impervious to impact. Ed

    Veritas LA block with Tote

When the special offer on the Veritas LA block was running at Axminster recently I picked one up, along with the tote and front knob. I am absolutely delighted with the role this little plane is now filling for me. Its bevel up configuration gives it an adjustable EP, meaning it acts as a...

    Extravagant...moi?

This is an tool I waited quite a while for, but the reality is no disappointment. Perfectly weighted, beautiful to hold and functions exactly as it should. When its sat on the bench there is an overwhelming desire to pick it up and use it. (its a mallet by the way, not a dildo) Ed

    Domino or not domino

Heres a slightly shocking fact; I was idly thumbing through my folder of the pictures of all the things I have ever made this evening and realised that of the items from the last couple of years, not many would have utilised a Domino. I daresay that if you had one it would begin to determine the...

    Sliding Step Stool Help

Was just about to type that when I read the last post. Pegs running in slots would be nice and simple. Sliding dovetails would be a moisture content dependant nightmare I would think. Ed

    Axminster at Rycotewood

Tom - I think you are making some interesting and valid points. If this is a commercial venture, which for Axminster it surely is, then why would a group of individuals like us turn up and do demonstrations for free. I am sure that the 'celebrity' demonstrators get paid, because ultimately they...

    first aid

What I was taught on the 4 day First Aid at Work course was as Gasman says. The course assumes you are doing first aid on other people, not yourself but the principles still apply. First thing remove any further danger - switch off machines etc. Second call for help / phone ambulance if you...
