    Get woodworking 2010

Surprisingly, in our experience, this isn't the case; Friday is usually the best/busiest day (for us that is - we have a different perspective). And yes, I'd agree that a lot of effort has been put into the show this year, it's brave of Andy to admit that it had gone downhill and I'm pleased...

    chestnut wood wax22

Aw, thanks jorgoz, I'm blushing now! I can confirm that the formulation for WoodWax 22 has not changed in recent years. There are several factors I can think of that could be in play here. As Chas says, it's possible that the original tin you had was a little old and the solvents had started...

    Sanding sealer confusion

It's all about compatability. Cellulose Sanding Sealer is more-or-less universal and can be used with any topcoat that benefits from a sealer, where Shellacs should only be used with french polishes, waxes and Friction Polish.

    Axminster Ral Number

I always thought Pantone colours were used in printing and therefore with inks. You'll normally get two colours per reference, one showing the 'true' colour and another showing it made from four colour process. There is normally a difference, sometimes quite substantial. Paintmakers don't like...

    Sanding sealer confusion

Timber is, generally speaking, porous. The purpose of the sanding sealer (any type) is to seal the wood so that when you apply a top coat (wax, polish, lacquer) it doesn't soak in, it stays on the surface. This will generally give you a hard wearing finish and use less topcoat. The latter is...

    Sanding sealer confusion

I'm not sure if the point of the original post hasn't been missed... Cellulose Sanding Sealer is diluted with Cellulose Thinners. Shellac (meths) based sealers/polishes are thinned with meths. The confusion arises, as said, when a product is referred to as just 'sanding sealer' - we do three...

Official line on Glues and Finishes for Food-Use Items?

Products such as those we're discussing are normally tested by an independent laboratory; there are a number dotted around the country. Most craft sellers would probably be careful about how their products were sold; a bowl or dish as opposed to a fruit bowl or food dish; how the product is...

Official line on Glues and Finishes for Food-Use Items?

I'm sorry to take so long to answer a direct question. I'm going to ramble on a bit first, my apologies in advance, and let me preface the following by saying that I use the internet a lot and enjoy taking part in this forum. I sometimes worry though that on there are well-intentioned people on...

Official line on Glues and Finishes for Food-Use Items?

Slightly at a tangent I was intrigued recently to see a product described a 'food safe conforming to ENV1186 - parts 1,2 and 3''. Closer inspection though showed that in this instance it means that as long as spills etc are removed within a certain time the wood underneath will not be damaged...

    Handles for drawers

Hi Jake Thanks for those; yes, that was exactly what I meant although sadly these are too wide for the materials we're using; however, the site you linked to has loads of other options and one of them will be perfect and probably work out cheaper too. Thanks again!

    Handles for drawers

Hi Folks I need some handles for some drawers; the main criteria is that they need to be flush fitting and preferably cheap - appearance isn't a major issue as they won't really be seen. One idea I've had is to use the type of pull you'd get in a kitchen - a shaped metal strip which would go...

    Any silversmiths/jewellery makers?

Hi All One of my daughters will be 18 in a couple of month's time and has asked everyone for a silver charm for a charm bracelet 'that will always remind her of the giver'. I'm wondering about having the Chestnut Products logo made as a small charm, is this feasible and is there anyone out...

virgin mail are getting a bit censorious

Nope, my understanding of reading it (and let's not forget that forums aren't always the best place to get accurate information of this type) that only certain potentially harmful attachments will be blocked. Zipped or rar'ed stuff will be okay unless it contains what virgin take to be harmful...

    Buffing System?

If we're still having problems by then Pete I think I'll just give up! Meanwhile, it's hard to imagine but if anyone is really desperate to get their hands on one of these kits please drop me a pm.

    Buffing System?

Thanks for those kind words Doug, the cheque's in the post! Meanwhile, supply problems continue with this project and we're in a situation where if we make the kit available to stockists then demand would quickly outstrip supply (well we hope so anyway!) so we're still holding back from...

Calling any Audacity users - help needed! - Now Solved

Hi Steve thanks for that suggestion; I had a look around but couldn't see anything glaringly obvious, so I did a little more digging (I'd missed the broadcast I wanted to record so was able to spend a little more time on it) and it appears the problem was that I had a webcam plugged into the...

Calling any Audacity users - help needed! - Now Solved

Hi I've been using Audacity for some years now, not very much recently, but I've tried to record something this morning and am not having any success. The problem is that the drop down box that gives me the option of the sound source (microphone, line-in, stereo mix etc) isn't givng me any...

    Gigs

The biggest problem I have is that much as I enjoy live music and the buzz of a concert, none of the current new bands excite me enough to want to go and see them. In my time I've seen Status Quo, Cher, Ultravox (several times including their reunion this year), Mari Wilson, Barbra Streisand...

    Colouring experiment

We get in trouble promoting products we can't yet sell, and sometimes unexpected problems (failure of suppliers usually) cause us to reschedule so I will tell more, but would prefer to wait until 'The Right Time'. It shoudln't be long (he says, trying not to think of the beleaguered Buffing Kit...

    2nd colouring experiment

Another good'un, and I'd agree that a gloss finish would bring the colours to life more, but it really is a matter of personal preference.
