2nd colouring experiment

Knocked up another HF to try colouring on and all before work :lol: This ones 5 inches tall and sycamore. I've used black,blue and green on this one. The black went on a bit patchy even after sealing so before the colours I soaked the piece in white spirit, they didn't mix with it but they did float on it for a bit and I blew them about with the compressor.

I must get some meths :roll: I think this look may work better with a more high gloss finish. The piece looks lots better from a few paces away :lol: Still I'm enjoying the experimentation

Probably breaking all the rules, but I skip the sealer if I'm thinking of adding a stain.

Was using melamine last night on my Burr box - and that leaves a fab finsh glossy finish...

This is very nice. The knot spoils it for me, personally and I'd like to see a bit of a glossy finish on it.

Another good'un, and I'd agree that a gloss finish would bring the colours to life more, but it really is a matter of personal preference.

Thanks guys I have a 10 week old son so I'm always up early :lol:

This HF only took about an hour to do as it was made from fairly green Sycamore and a branch not much wider than this form and green Sycamore cuts like butter

Please let up on the use of 4 letter words in posts, work :shock: is not one of those words conducive to enhancing workshop time.

I think this piece is bordering on a Ceramic or Glass simulation in appearance, and as such would be enhanced as has been said by a gloss finish, applying something like melamine, perhaps to Terry's horror, thinned down a little and immediately burnished dry would provide some added blending of the stains.
Difficult choice really as with most post staining/colouring applications you immediately enter a no return process.

For some reason the colour blend on this piece brings thoughts about a textured ( shot blast stipple ) on a similar piece with a semi mat finish, Tiffany style?

The americans use a lot of wipe on poly. Not sure what that is but the gloss finish they get is like glass. I'll ask on the other forum what it is.

Just ahd a reply, the stuff that they use is this stuff here. Don't know what the english equivalent is. Some dilute it a bit first and then from the sound of it do a lot of buffing. The result is like glass

'Poly' is Polyurethane AKA Varnish. Any wiping varnish will do.

Might try diluting some gloss polyurethane then, just a case of getting some(the buggers have got me working 7 days for the next couple of weeks ), I had a big tin but got a load of ash the other week and didn't have anything else to hand to seal the ends :roll: Sods law in action again :lol:
