MITRE PLANE CONVERSION TO SHOOTING BOARD PLANE

Good morning, Brothers, Below is another recent project. I had an old mitre plane in my collection that was not being used much. I added a rosewood sole, and converted it to a shooting board plane. I turned a simple knob with a tenon on the bottom. I then tested a few of my Forstner...

    Two QUICK Shop TIPS:

Sadly, living in the Colonies, my available selection of Scotch whiskies is severely limited. Worse yet, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in particular, where the liquor stores are administered by the state government. As you may have heard, everything that the government touches turns to...

Yes indeed! A real USA-made corn cob pipe (Missouri Meerschaum- https://corncobpipe.com/). It is my "secondary" shop pipe. The "primary" one is black with use! They last a long time, and smoke very nicely. The stems need replacement often, but are inexpensive. I stopped taking my good...

    Dovetails in softwood

Yes indeed! The start of a long and opinion-laden post! 😂 1) Absolutely purchase, convert (a pin gauge), or fabricate a slitting gauge! You will find it makes very crisp knife lines in most situations. On the same note, get accustomed to using a marking knife to mark out lines. Save your...

Two small planes saved and restored.

Is that truly a "crack" in the blade, OR... where the steel lamination meets the the iron of the blade stock? Hard to tell from the photo, but I have seen this often on my laminated blades. Perhaps it is not truly a "crack". You can see where the blade suddenly develops pitting where the steel...

    What tree is this

Thanks! I needed something like this! I downloaded it. Can't wait to try it on some of the local trees.

    What tree is this

Agreed! Unlike many others, I find that cleaning the flue is required two or three times each winter. Part of the problem is that we have a high-efficiency stove, and we must damp it down at night so it goes not get too hot in the homestead. The creosote builds up quickly! And thickly!

    What tree is this

I also agree. Looks like a willow. I had to cut one down that we planted about twenty years ago. Was always sickly. We cut it up for burning. It does not have a reputation for putting out BTUs, but it catches fire readily. We used it mainly to start the wood-burner, then added other more...

Your favourite thing you have made from reclaimed timber 🤔 📸

Hello Brothers, I just completed the second door to my plane cabinet. All of the cabinets in the pictures below were made of reclaimed timbers or reclaimed furniture. Some were from 1 x 6" birch trim obtained from the local bank when it was remodeled. Some were from pallets. Some from...

Yes, I keep the good stuff in the fridge, but it is a royal PIA to have to leave the shop and go home to get the CA glue! Perhaps that will allow me to justify purchasing a small fridge for the shop! I will then also be closer to the suds! 😂
