    Gratuitous Plane ****......warning, explicit images.....

I feel the same Jimi - many people, even professional furniture makers I know dont see the point of spending more than you have to on tools. Myself, I have always brought the most expensive, as by and large, in life, you get what you pay for. I love the feel and look and pleasure of owning...

I am hoping someone can help me get the vice on my new bench working properly. Its brand new, and I separated the jaws to fit the wooden overcheeks and i am sure I put it back together how it was, but its not working properly, so I have missed something. Its a york i think, from Axminster and it...

Nice Little Sorby Backsaw - Bootfair today

Nice find jimi....i picked up anice old saw on ebay recently and was wondering about the bestway to restore it a bit as well. The handle is a bit loose on the blade, not sure how to sort this. The whole saw is pretty dirty as well, but i think it should clean up nicely. Cheers, mark

    My workbench Project

OK, little update, I have had a pretty productive few days and the legs and frame are almost finished. As you can see from the pictures, i went with the rounded shoulders on the mortice and tenons, I am going to dowel the top frame members through the legs with birch 10mm dowels and the bottom...

American and English Vintage Stanley planes - some advice ?

Hi, do the same dating features apply equally to these, or are they two entirely separate beasts? Another E bay foundling has just arrived at my door ( £10 - bargain!!) , but the body is clearly stamped made in England behind the frog. I think it will restore nicely, and its certainly very...

new project - Ebay sweetheart 5and a half

Well, I have hit a couple of snags, both to do with the iron. Firstly, there seems to be a fair bit of slack in the adjuster. The two prongs of the adjuster fork do not fit completely tightly between the steps of the adjuster knob, meaning that you can wiggle the blade up and down a few...

    My workbench Project

Sorry, this next batch of pictures should be much smaller. I have started doing the mortices in the legs for the cross members. For the top ones that are open on one side, I used a bandsaw and my pillar drill to remove the big chunk of material then cleaned up with a chisel. One is perfect, the...

new project - Ebay sweetheart 5and a half

Well, she is finished. not 100%, as I have discovered that the iron has been sharpened too many times to protrude through the throat with the cap iron correctly seated and with approx 1mm of blade showing. So I have a Hock iron and chipbreaker arriving Monday for her. But the body has been...

Drill table: I'm thick, and the MDF isn't!

Wow, this is spooky !! Today I just took delivery of my new Sealey pillar drill. I got it primarily to help producing the mortices on the legs of the bench I am making and made the first one tonight. The drill however came without a vice and it quickly became apparent to me that for accurate...

Another E-bay rescue.... vintage No6 , some info please

Ok, from a bit of research, I am pretty positive it is a type 14. This makes it a 1929 version. Still undecided about its fate really, it has not really grabbed me like the number5and a half I have just finished... cheers, Mark

    Advice on pillar drill purchase.

Thanks for the kind offer Terry, however , I have just plumped for this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 559wt_1139 which seemed a pretty good quality machine and quite powerful, manufacturer refurbished and like new, for under half the normal price. Thanks for the input...

    My workbench Project

OK, I am now ready to consider the design of the frame and underneath. One problem that I did not consider in the design is that to make the legs symmetrical from each end, they will give a large overhang ( 400mm ) at each side, due to the size and construction of the front vise . I am thinking...
